Wouldn't that be the LS3 (currently used in the Corvette and Camaro SS, 376 cu. in.), at least as far as performance goes. I guess the LS7 (427 cu. in.) comes closest to being a modern day version of the old BB.

BTW, these days I have a 1972 Corvette coupe with a 383 - fun car:
