Everyone,
It is indeed an OIL COOLER. That setup is exactly what comes factory on the old 350z/G35 VQ35DE engines. It uses engine coolant to cool the engines oil. As many of you know, engine oil can get much hotter than the coolant. This is something Nissan has apparently carried over from the VQ35DE engines for other countries.

I am shocked that Nissan did not keep this sub system to begin with.

so people trying to install an aftermarket cooler will have to uninstall the entire assembly correct? I wish we can see how this pseudo oil cooler performs at the track. I'm willing to bet not too well.

so basicly nissan is admitting to extremely high temps and tried to throw a cooler on the 2011 models. What about us 09/10 models. Guess they dont care?!

You should not have to remove that piece since the OE Filter still screws on. You will basically be daisy-chaining two oil coolers together. If you have this version of the 370z, I might consider NOT getting thermostatic sandwich plate adapter since the engine coolant will help raise the temperature.

Nissan has used this style oil cooler before. I am really shocked that they did not keep it on the VQ37VHR engine. I just looked in the Nissan parts catalog and the VQ35HR does not even have this cooler. Only the VQ35DE has it.

I added a thermostatic sandwich plate to my Audi that had the "coolant cooler". The result was great (at the track I would get close to 300F, with the cooler it was closer to 260F). Ran it summer and winter in Chicago. No issues.

Just an FYI, the oil cooler above circulates coolant as previously mentioned to warm the oil when it's cold and cool it down when it's hot. It's not very efficient though and a separate aftermarket oil cooler does a much better job at it.

The hard lines go all the way to the heater pipe on the driver's side engine head. The other outlet for the cooler goes to another water pipe located right under the exhaust port on piston #6 on the driver's side engine block.

As far as which models got it, it comes on all VQ35DE although the pipe routing is different. It does not come on the VQ35HR and VQ37VHR in the US regardless of the model year. It DID however come pre-installed from factory to all G35's, G37's and 370Z's shipped to the Middle East and apparently Australia as well. I'm assuming there's more locations yet to be known.

The same oil cooler is also installed on all AWD G35's and G37's regardless of location.

Anyhow, below is a diagram from the FSM showing the routing of the pipes. This is on an HR which is identical to a VHR.

The image above shows the oil cooler/warmer system with all the associated water pipes circled in red. On cars that do not come with this system, water pipe #13 does not come with the small water outlet that connects to hose #11. As for the other water pipe #12, it does not exist and is instead replaced with a block off plate mounted straight to the engine block.

The picture below shows an HR block with no oil cooler/warmer. The upper water pipe has no 3rd outlet and the lower water pipe does not exist.

Curious as to whether you can post the diagram with the radiator, and if you know the radiator fluid capacity specs? In Japan they have aftermarket radiators for our 370Z that are much larger and they tout them for better cooling. So I am wondering whether you have a larger factory radiator too? The middle east spec Z's and G's are said to come with larger radiators but I can't seem to find any specific info regarding size or capacity. The FSM I have is actually US spec. I'm trying to get my hands on a ME spec FSM with no luck. I don't even know if we have a specific FSM for the ME.

Anyhow, the user manual states that the capacity for the cooling system is 9.6L/8.5qts plus 0.8L/0.75qts for the reservoir. This is for the VHR engine. The HR is slightly less.

Another interesting piece we have is a factory automatic transmission oil cooler (driver's side).

Why does none of this surprise me any longer? It would be nice if Nissan would at least provide an avenue to purchase these parts in the US. The automatic transmission cooler is simply a great accessory for increasing the life of an automatic transmission. I'm sure Nissan's US PR department is past its quota of bullsh!t reasons for not having these items on US models. Thanks for the info and pic.
