IDK if this has been done yet but it's always nice to know what kind of tech is giving giving you your power and how it works. (toyota VVT-I/VVTL-I Honda V-tec ect...)

Variable Valve Event and Lift

Nissan Variable Valve Event and Lift (commonly abbreviated as "VVEL") is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Nissan.

Nissan VVEL was first introduced to the US market in late-2007 on the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe sporting the new "VVEL" VQ37VHR Nissan VQ Engine (VQ37VHR motor specs: 11.0:1 CR, 95.5mm bore, 86mm stroke, 7500rpm redline). VVEL variable valve timing is now also used in the all new VK50VE V8 engine of the Infiniti FX50.

A rocker arm and two types of links open the intake-valves by transferring the rotational movement of a drive shaft with an eccentric cam to the output cam. The movement of the output cam is varied by rotating the control shaft within the DC motor and changing the fulcrums of the links. This makes a continuous adjustment of the valve lift amount possible. C-VTC and VVEL together control the valve phases and its valve events, allowing free-control of the valve timing and lift. This results in more efficient airflow to the cylinder, significantly improved responsiveness, optimizing the balance between power and environmental performance.

It performs similarly to BMW's Valvetronic system but with desmodromic control of the output cam, allowing VVEL to operate at higher engine speeds (RPM). Other similar systems are offered Toyota (Valvematic).

all companies have a similar technology, honda has ivtec and what not, but where vvel differs is that it allows the timing and the lift of the valves to be adjusted infinitely by the ecu (as opposed to only variable timing using cams). This leads to better fuel economy as well as more power when needed but as you can imagine its quite complicated and hard to modify. There is potential but its all locked up.

1slow370: I hope your sig means that you are close to cracking VVEL, that would be absolutely awesome if you did! I would be first in line for a tune when that happens.

If thats the case then I guess ill have to be second. From what Ive be seeing, companies are having a hard time cracking the VVEL. COBB tuning has stopped production of there flash tuner, im guessing its because of this issue. How much hp tq and PSI do you think it can handle? Is there going to have to be a VVEL upgrade so we can run this car at 800....even 1000+ hp?? This is more of a, what do you think kind of question, but its an interesting concept to think about.

my project is from the hardware side. I am building the fixtures needed to be able to accurately position the valves when readjusting the mechanical links for higher valve lift. Basically i'm opening the valves farther, and getting a 3 angle valve job done. It's the vvel equivalent of getting bigger cams. if i get the hardware down it will put the parts out there for uprev.

Well with this motor i think we will be playing the standard VQ game with the enginewe have guys making 500+ hp at 10ish psi so it's not unreasonable to think that if someone built the cripes out of the bottom end and gaskets/studs to run 30-35psi that would put them in the 1000whp range (basically). But more efficient heads always helps

well lets get to it man, what are you doing on here. j/j. Are you going to lengthin the valve springs?? that may give the valve more distance to travel, but then again how would that affect the heads or even the actual VVEL system? The video below says something about being able to adjust the VVEL system but idk, i kinda just skimed through it.

Pretty sure Bullitt is using a vq35hr instead of the vq37vhr and that is how he is getting around the issue w/ the vvel. I could be wrong though.

It's nice to see someone working on this. I've always wanted to venture into the fabrication side of tuning. I plan on taking a machining class in the near future. The VVEL is the one thing that worries me about the 370. Keep us up to date!
