If you are D mode and go to WOT it drops 2 gears so it wont be instantanious, also while in D mode and you go to manual mode it will drop 2 gears. If in manual and you go WOT it should react pretty quick if you are in the right gear and have the rpms up. I get theat metal sound at times too, dont think its anything to worry about.

ah k. just alittle diff to me. in my 2001 ta i could b in 3rd gear and when i went wot it was very quick to downshift into 1st.

so are you saying if im already in manual mode and im around around 40 mph and go wot its going to downshift automatically still? or you saying to drop the gears down manually first and holding the speed at say 40 and then punching it like in a normal manual?

other than the fun factor there is no performance gain in the manual mode is there?

i know in my 2005 GXP grand prix. it actually increased the pressure for quicker gear changes in its tapshift mode. but didnt think that was the case in the Z?

only asking because ive seen a few posts of people saying theyw as using there tapshift in the 1/4 and it kinda seemed strange to do that since it would be better to just let the car handle the shifting in straightline runs

If you punch it at 40mph in manual mode it will not automatically downshift.. you have to get in the right gear to have the response you want. people use the paddle shifters in the 1/4 because at WOT the 7AT shifts very fast..

faster than letting it shift itself in D? if there is no difference like firming shifting in manual or a quicker response then its pretty much impossible to out do the D shifting am i right?

2009 Nissan 370Z Automatic - Short Take Road Test - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver
This article might shed some light on it..from what I understand the paddle shifters are definitely faster than leaving it in D, as they pulled off 0-60 in 4.6s with the paddles. Correct me if i'm wrong, though. I also have that delay in the dropping two gears to lane-change though, has a hesitation that i don't really like but its livable.

yea. i wonder if it just because of all the gears in the a7 or if its a ecu thing making sure the tranny lives long by not letting it shift in a flash down to say 1st or second gear.

and thanks for the link im gonna check it out

hmm car and driver seem to think that manual mode does change the cars shifting speed ect. guess i should start testing it out some more.

basically in manual its just like if it had a clutch and all, you have to be in the right gear and the right rpms to get good throttle response. Mine downshifts quickly and I can downshift then downshift again right away. just a blip blip and Ive gone down 2 gears quickly. While in D mode it lke to keep rpms down for gas milage and when you go WOT in D mode it drops 2 gears but you are still in D mode. If in D mode and you go to manual it should drop about 2 gears too depending how hard you are on the gas. The ECU tries to read how you are driving at that instant and match it with what its doing when in D mode.

what si the point of doing that?

you would need to upshift pretty quickly after that since you would be near the red already.

if I go WOT in D it goes down gear by gear so say If im going around 70-80 and go WOT

its like 7-6-5-4 but this happens quickly so I rarely catch all the shifts. I wish you could see the gear number while in D like in the GT-R

manual wont downshift unless you go under 1500 RPM.

I get the click too when im going into P. it kinda sound like the sounds the car makes if you shift while the engine is off and without the clutch on a MT.

I do wonder. does the AT in M upshift if you get into red?

I dont think so I think it backs off the rpms auto matically, kinda like a short limp mode feature.

If you are in manual mode at WOT the rev limiter will eventually kick in and it feels like you got off the gas. The only automatic shifting in manual mode is low rpm down shifting.

I feel a big difference in shift response and even pedal response while in M mode. It revs more like a manual and you don't feel that plateau prior to shift change that you do in D mode.
