Help: Transmission Rear Oil Seal Dust Cover
Hi all,
Summary: The dust cover that covers the transmission rear oil seal has come loose and I don't know how to reseat it onto the transmission housing. Anyone know how to remount this part? (see pics attached) So suddenly my 370z (6MT) started making a LOUD grinding and chattering noise coming from the transmission. The noise only occurs when the car is moving and goes away above 60mph. The noise is present if the clutch is engaged or disengaged so it didn't seem like the CSC. The car shifted fine and also doesn't make any abnormal noises when stopped and revving the engine. I limp the car home and put it in the air. After spinning the wheels while in the air, I notice a metal collar flailing about right where the driveshaft mates with the transmission. Turns out this is the "Dust Cover" that protects the transmission's rear oil seal, and the Factory Service Manual makes no mention of how to reinstall this part, nor how its supposed to mount into the transmission housing. So here I am looking to the internet for advice.. Any help is appreciated! P.S. I couldn't figure out how to embed images in the post.. Sorry for being a noob |

It's pressed into the housing. You can reinstall it using a big socket and tap in back in place. What I would do. Is to clean the outside of the area that going into the housing. Then apply some red Lock-Tite Stud and Bearing mount to that area and tap in.

Update: My Dust Cover wasn't a tight fit so I rolled the lip a little wider in hopes of keeping things together. No hammering required. The Locktite 680 was a great recommendation, it seems solid now.
Thank you for the help Rusty. I'm glad you're around this forum and willing to help out. |
