Crankshaft Pulley Install Help

Good Day All,

I had a question that hopefully one of you bros may be able to assist with. Some time ago I had purchased the Stillen lightweight crankshaft pulley. This weekend I got around to actually installing it. I have removed the old pulley and lined up the new pulley with the key on the crankshaft by hand, then used the old pulley bolt to seat the the pulley on the shaft. The new pulley seated on the crankshaft easily. However, with the Stillen pulley seated, there is approximately 16.5mm/.5" between the end of the crank and the face of the pulley. My question is whether or not this is normal? I did not get a good look at the old pulley before removing it and the FSM does not mention anything on the matter. It appears that everything is lined up just fine. The pulley appears to be in line with all of the accessory/idler pulleys. From what I was able to gather about other cars is a gap between the end of the crankshaft and the pulley is common and normal. However, I could not find anything Nissan specific, and the gap I have seems pretty substantial. I just don't have any confirmation of whether this seemingly substantial gap is normal of not. I have attached some pictures of the pulley on the crankshaft for reference. I've also contacted Stillen directly but their response was: "Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, At this time being, we do not have any more technicians or engineers, so i rather not give any false information in regards to a crucial step such as this."

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

In my limited experience with harmonic balancers and vibration dampers on older engines (1960s-1980s), there will be some variation in where different units fit on the driveshaft. As long as the belt(s) lines up, you should be good to go.

If the belts line up, and the bolt is torqued. You're good to go.

That was my logic too. I also can't think of anything that could have shifted or anything either.

Half an inch of gap just seems like a bit much though. Also, the techs over at Z1 "haven't seen anything like this." I just don't want to torque this down, start it up, and have it go kablamo over a pulley.

Thanks for the replies guys! Keep 'em coming if anyone else has an opinion on the matter. I'll wait a little longer to see if anyone else has input on it it. If not, I'll just risk it for the biscuit and hope for the best.

I have to ask.. was that actually Stillen's response??

What Rusty said. I would, for soundness of mind, pull the new pulley, reinstall the OEM, and see if there is a gap. Then pull the OEM and compare the two, see if their identically sized.

I would just put the oem one back on and sell the stillen one on fb marketplace, eventually the stillen one is going to sieze to the crank and never come off again

A little bit of Never-Seez (or equiv) will lessen the chance of seizing/galling.

LOL, when it cracks in two pieces will come off.

I also can't think of anything that could have shifted or anything either. Half an inch of gap just seems like a bit much though. Also, the techs over at Z1 "haven't seen anything like this."
