I am suprised you can hear any under hood mechanical engine noise at speeds above 20 mph.

Now an exhaust leak, yes you could likely hear that at highway speed, an exhaust leak will change with throttle position.

One thing you might try thats easy is to remove the drive belt and start the engine. If noise is gone then you know its one of the accessories or tensioner pulley.

Were you absolutely sure the primary timing chain didn't jump a tooth or two when you were replacing the gaskets? Mine definitely did during the install and my buddy and I turned to each other with matching "o f*ck" looks on our faces...

Yea the chains didn’t move I made marks and zip tied it down. Triple checked before putting everything back. The noise is the same from before I opened it up so I know it’s not the chain.

Just changed oil to a thicker 5w 40. Oil pressure is up a bit and the noise isn’t as loud anymore.

What does your oil pressure look like now?

Full throttle they look the same but cruising is where it’s different. Just cruising 75-80 it’s at 82 when it would be at or below 75

Well now something happened the oil pressure won’t go over 50psi and the noise is now so loud it’s a banging noise. I guess it’s going to a shop now.

  :(

BettyZ 01-06-2019 04:11 PM

Jesus man I'm sorry to hear that. It was running OK before that?

Vid of the banging would be helpful.

I’ll try to get one in the morning. It’s at the shop now but I haven’t decided if I’m going to have them work on it or not.
The noise doesn’t happen all the time like it used to, just in the 2000-4000rpm range still.
Only on partial throttle past half in that band no noise. Even with the oil pressure low. But partial throttle sounds like a couple of aliens in my engine bay taking cast iron pans to my motor.
Could this be a bad oil pump? What else would cause the sudden drop? I replaced the oil gallery already

Sounds like rod knock. New engine or spin some new bearings in it and see what happens.

Jordan12berg 01-06-2019 05:43 PM

Wouldn’t rod knock happen all the time?
What do you honk cause the sudden drop in oil pressure?

Jordan12berg 01-06-2019 05:47 PM

No metal in the oil.

BettyZ 01-06-2019 06:35 PM

Depending on how long ago you did the gaskets, pressure drop could potentially be from a piece of loose permatex blocking your oil pickup.

Bottom-line though, the cost of the shop looking at it is less than the cost of a new engine.

Ok so there was metallic found this time, they didn’t find it the other week just from looking at it briefly. The sound is coming from the bottom of the engine. So I guess my oil pump hasn’t been the best, now who knows what the damage is inside the motor.
Found an engine with less miles for 1500. Going to hurt.
Lesson learned, these engines need oil pressure gauges. I could have caught the blown oil gallery gaskets before serious damage was done.
At least I got the oil pressure gauge in now, my pockets hurt could have used that money on suspension or something but hopefully this story pushes other to get an oil pressure gauge.
Thanks for all of y’all help through this
