I just called and got an appointment for 8am Tuesday. The grind only
happens about once a day so I'm not optimistic they'll be able to
reproduce it that morning, according to Round Rock Nissan might have to
leave the car there for them to try multiple days..

Service appointment was successful.

The technician first again shifted in the double
clutch like fashion, then I told him twice I shift
in one motion. As soon as he shifted in one
motion it reproduced. From what I can tell
he shifted strait from 2nd to 5th. I get the picture
he had seen the problem before and just wanted to
cut to the chase.

Also got the "rear hatch does not open after first
push of release button" issue reproduced.

I've got a new transmission and rear hatch parts
on order with Nissan.

Took the Z to the dealership yesterday because both iKeys spontaneously stopped working after the car sat in my parking for 5 days after a big snow storm here. Worked on 12/18/09, car sat for 5 days, then 5 days later after things thawed out, I had to use the real key to manually unlock the door and put the iKey in the slot for the pushbutton to work. The whole thing is fubar. Replaced batteries, still didn't work. blah blah blah...

Anyhow...casually mentioned that 5th gear and 6th gear are crunching. Car has 16,000 miles on it, been doing it since 5000 miles.

They called today to say that my new transmission is on the way.

NICE!

Seems like I remember someone on the forum mentioning that the problem that was destroying the 6th gear (and apparently 5th gear) synchronizers was that we were inadvertently pressing down on the shifter when shifting into 6th. Doing that starts to engage the reverse gear mechanisms and somehow screws around with the 5th and 6th gear synchros.

Just sayin.....

wtf... this **** never happened with the 300zx.

ya after 70,000 miles and 20 years of abuse the synchros are starting to go. but not when they were new.

but hell nissan made a new transmission for us! the 98 spec transmission.

this is ridiculous. this should not be happening.

My car does the same thing when shifting quickly to 6th. It only happens about once a week though so I doubt anyone would be able to reproduce it. I'll try to get it looked at at the same time I bring it in for hatch release not working properly, again...

I ground second twice yesterday, which has been happening more and more frequently in the last 5k miles. Now 4-5 grinds every time. Calling dealer.

Read my post.

I had no issue. My main complaint was the i-Keys not working and just casually mentioned that 6th gear was grinding when shifting 5-6. I knew fully well that a new transmission was what was needed, but I have dealth with it for 12,000 miles now (17,000 on the car...problem started @ 5000mi) and probably wouldn't have raised any hell with them if they didn't want to do anything about it. But to my surprise, they kept the car for diagnosis and the next day called and said I had a new transmission on the way.

This new one is extremely quiet, whereas the original one had lots and lots of obnoxious gear noise and clunking from the start, and then the grinding started later. New one is quiet as a church mouse. The dealership I went to gave me no problems whatsoever about replacing it.

That's not a double clutch, it's just waiting for the revs to drop. Obviously, if you are at higher RPMs, that drop will happen more quickly, to the point where you can basically quickshift.

You can tell when you're doing it right, because it slides right in .

Glad to know it's not just my car. Hopefully Nissan will get their crap together and fix these issues. My car does the grind when I skip 5th and shift into 6th, usually at a higher RPM. To avoid it crunching I usually pull it out of 4th/3rd and press it against 6th while I wait for the RPMs to drop and it will slip into 6th by itself easily. Still it's very annoying.

Nissan wouldn't have these issues if they went with a reputable transmission manufacturer, such as Getrag, instead of desiging their own.

In two days I will officially be on my 3rd transmission... first it was a grind from 5th to 6th, now it's from 4th to 5th. The general service manager thinks Nissan will void my powertrain warranty (which sucks already coming from a previous Hyundai owner - 10 years/100,000 versus 3 years/36,000 miles) since no one in the area has had these problems... That's funny...because the only ones they've sold have been mine and two others...and of those, one is a 7AT, and the other is a 6MT Syncrorev driven by a school teacher in her mid 30s. Anyone ever written a "good" research paper using only 3 sources.....that don't even a agree.....
