How do I un-goof this?

Hey Guys, I was trying to take off my muffler tonight and one of the nuts ended up being rounded, how to I get it off?

Use a hacksaw and cut groves in the head. Then take a chisel and break the head off. Or heat it up and hacksaw the head off completely.

I would soak it with PB Blaster or WD-40 and either go out and buy an extractor socket? Or Vise-Grip it off If you have enough room.

Or hacksaw it off like it has been suggested, But take care not to damage the stud threads if you plan on re-using it later on.

Thanks for the suggestions guys on undoing my goof, the extractor socket method seems best here since i'm just tinkering with the exhaust

Lots of good tips above. I recommend buying a good 6-point wrench/socket set for next time - much less chance of rounding heads.

Would something like this be an easier approach to the dreaded cat bolts? Seems like breaking the nut would be less work than removing it, especially if the hardware will be replaced anyway with test pipes

I ran into this problem year ago when I was putting an exhaust on my Integra. Ended up taking a hack-saw to it, and sawed all the way through it.

I tried both the nut splitter and an extractor on the demon 19mm front end-link nut. Neither worked. I had to cut the end-link off with a Dremel and order a new link and nut. For my cats, the nuts either twisted off correctly or snapped the bolts. This was with an impact socket and 4" cheater bar. After fighting with those things, I was thrilled when they snapped.

My vote is Dremel and replace, if you can.

yep, ive snapped off a nut using an impact long time ago on a rusted out exhaust. haha
but i was expecting it.

considering our cars are newer (or i dont drive my Z in the salt) i dont mind using impacts on the exhaust when needed to do the work.
