DIY: How To Blackout/Plasti-dip Handles

Hey guys-

Been seeing a ton of questions about plasti-dip for those who are blacking out parts of their car. Here is a video I uploaded to show you how to properly dip a 370z handle!

I have done my handles about 3-4 times since I purchased the car almost 2 years ago. I think for $6, you can't beat it.

Also, remember that you can use any color plastidip for your handles.

Red car, red plastidip, red handles.

White car, white dip, white handles..

You know what I like most about this video Nick? You show how everything just comes right off with no problems in case you don't like it or did something wrong the first time around and how easy the cleanup is. +1 man! Great DYI!

NickTurnon 04-28-2013 03:01 PM

Thanks Vicster!

I think dipped handles are great and hope it helps those who need them done. Fun weekend modification!

Vicster 04-29-2013 09:38 AM

Hey Nick, seriously considering doing this soon. For the driver's side door, do you have any special way to deal with the keyhole?

Also, I imagine that this same method should work rather well for the badges, right?

NickTurnon 04-29-2013 10:06 AM

The keyhole is not even a problem. The first time you put your key in, the dip comes off the keyhole & you can peel it off.

As for the badges, you'll do the same thing as I did in the video. Tape off all around, spray, take a toothpick or your finger to get the inside of the emblems.

So far I have dipped:
Fangs
Rear Valance
Side Mirrors
Emblems
Side Blinkers/Emblems
Mud Skirts
Tail Lights
Rear Spoiler
Handles
Headlights
Wheels

Have fun with it!

im surprised you didnt use a heating gun to remove the emblems and then plastidip them

That would be a pain in the butt. Not only that, but you'd have to get 3M tape or some sort of glue to re-install the emblem back on.

You can literally spray this while the emblem is on the car and it works perfectly.

You Plasti-dipped the taillights?! They look great in the pic above, but can you show a close up? One with the lights on? Can you see the lights through the Dip?

Dzel 04-30-2013 02:23 PM

Interested in doing the wing I painted my fence and valence satin black already.

Look at the video & I have others on my youtube channel.

You can see thru the lights perfectly. Especially with the LEDs that the 370 has.

Great video

How about automatic car wash, any expierience?

NickTurnon 05-14-2013 11:29 AM

I have used them before with no problems. I think since I have owned the car I have been to 3 carwashes. 2 of them being automatic. No problems with the dip coming off or scraping up.

You can take a pressure washer to plastidip when its properly applied.

So much better then actually buying black or carbon fiber wrapped door handles for $200.

Wabbyyy 05-14-2013 02:35 PM

Car looks good nick!

raymondo510 05-16-2013 01:56 AM

so i dipped mine, and I sware I must of put like six coats but when I went to pull it off... well lets just say it was not a clean as yours, that Sh!t stuck everywhere!!! any tips on how to take it off?

NickTurnon 05-16-2013 09:33 AM

It shouldn't "stick everywhere"... Do you have a picture of what you are talking about?

Also, you have to make sure whatever you are plasti-dipping is CLEAN. So that means taking a wet rag and scrubbing off the handles/wheels/emblems, etc...

Upload a pic. Ill walk you thru it. For the time being, if theres sticky residue from the dip left on your undipped handle...get some GOO GONE and put it on a rag and rub it off.

NickTurnon 05-16-2013 11:57 AM

FOR THE ADVANCED: ORG. 08AWSTI
*NOTE: This can be done while the handles are still on the car! Disassembly is not needed.

1) MEASURE OUT CARBON FIBER WRAP TO INNER HANDLE
2) CUT WRAP WITH SHARP TOOL
3) PEEL BACKING OFF WRAP & HEAT AND APPLY TO INNER HANDLE.
4) REMOVE BAD EDGES WITH SHARP TOOL (XACTO KNIFE WORKS GREAT)
5) ONCE WRAP IS ON INNER HANDLE, TAKE HEAT GUN AND GO OVER THE ENTIRE HANDLE
6) MAKE SURE HANDLE IS CLEAN, TAPE OFF THE INNER HANDLE PORTION YOU JUST WRAPPED & YOU WILL BE PLASTI-DIPPING OVER.
7) TAPE OFF ENTIRE HANDLE AREA AS SEEN IN MY VIDEO ABOVE.
8) SPRAY ENTIRE HANDLE
9) WHEN DRY, PEEL OFF EXCESS PLASTI-DIP & DIP ON INNER HANDLE.
10) RUB EXCESS OFF PAINT WITH FINGERS

When done properly, it lasts.

Handles and wheels are great. I get compliments all the time.

ZoroItaliano 05-29-2013 01:02 PM

I did my handles.... they look good , just that it feels sticky sometimes. Perhaps it has to do with the humidity? Just to give you an idea... I did 3 coats of charcoal grey and 1 coat of metalizer....

NickTurnon 05-29-2013 01:26 PM

I noticed that if you heavily coat the last layer and spray a little closer then you normally would, the texture of the handle changes.

It becomes almost glossier or provides a more "shiney/wet" look.

When you do the last coat, try and spray the last coat further away.
Almost like a mist rather then a spray. It might help give a little rougher texture so its not so sticky...

Mine get a little sticky when left in the 106 degree AZ heat.

tail lights

How did you do your tail lights? Did you tape off the clear part? Plasti dip?

NickTurnon 06-06-2013 09:49 PM

Yes- Just taped off the reverse light. Use your nail and make sure the edge is completely lined up. And when you peel, peel when its wet and use a sharp edge to tear against. Itll make sure none of the dip hangs on to the tape when you remove it.

Good luck! Just do one or two coats. Anything more than that gets too dark. Also. Test the lights with each coat that you do. That way you get the desired darkness that you are achieving.

PetePlays 06-07-2013 01:49 PM

Great thanks. I'm doing the badges as I type.... handles are next then the rear lights.

PetePlays 06-11-2013 03:30 PM

plasti dip complete

I have completed the plasti dip experiment. I did all the badges, side blinkers, bake lights(red part only) and the center brake light. Looks awesome! Thanks for the help. :driving:

Do you know how to remove the center Nissan cap in the center of the wheel?

w0rM 06-13-2013 09:46 PM

I did my handles and emblems back in December and it's still holding up well.

Im think im going to try this soon :)

ElVee 07-18-2013 09:35 AM

Has anyone tried to color match gunmetal grey with plasti-dip smoke? If so, any pics on how it looks?

NickTurnon 07-18-2013 10:37 AM

I recently started looking on this forum for ideas and for color examples.

Give it a nice 5 minute read and you'll probably join that forum too!

I was going to ask how they hold up in the heat since I'm from Phoenix, then I saw the post about 106 degrees and saw you are actually in Scottsdale. If they hold up for you should for me. Might get on this soon, might do the rims too, totally black out my car. You go to any meet ups like Cars & Coffee? Be great to see your ride.

I am always out and about at all of Arizonas local meets. Check out this thread for more info and to find other people in AZ with Z's. We are planning a big photo soon, so you can join us!

Also, let me know if you need plastidip help. I am willing to give a hand or help you out on the forum

NismoZ70 08-27-2013 10:02 PM

So my car is gun metal and I decided to plasti dip the door handles black. It wasn't bad but I'm trying to figure out if there are some other plasti dip colors that would go well. Was considering either the anthracite or silver metalizer over black. Maybe even gun metal or charcoal. Just want something that would maybe blend better. I love the black on the emblems in front and back but for whatever reason didn't care for it as much on my door handles.

Any suggestions?
