Got mine finished and back today, a few quick night shots when i got off work. There is 3 coats of a flat black enamel paint, they did a nice job.

Nice! Are you sure they didn't put a clear coat? It seems to have a gloss to it.

Yea no clear coat. Guess its just the flood light above the garage reflecting when I took the pictures. During the day it doesnt look shiny:)

help! i did my fangs today and i was trying to spray the bottom edge and it sprayed on too thick. now it looks shiny while the other parts look like the satin black. how do i fix this? do i use a fine grit sandpaper to even the color all out? the paint also permeated through the plastic painters tarp i used and i got paint on other parts of my bumper but i used goo gone to get that off.

ok man sounds like u were rushin... jus chill and do it slowly... if u didnt get it sprayed and missed some parts just chill first then spray it again.... to fix ur uneven coats... u have to reshot the whole fang area again.... :shakes head: jus do one to two coats of the satin black and ul be fine... but this time take ur time man dont jump the gun... REMEMBER... its not how long it takes to do the fangs that matters... its the OUTCOME of the fangs that matter...

iKnightmare 09-28-2009 09:19 AM

I took about a 15 minute break per coat and I was doing thin layers, but there was a corner that was hard to reach so it didn't get the paint it wanted and so I sprayed that area directly and it got blasted. I used 800 grit sand paper on the shiny areas and then resprayed 1-2 layers of the satin black. Then, I used 2000 grit on everything to smooth out the orange peel look and to even the partial shiny areas. Shot it with 3 coats of the matte clear coat, and wha-la! Looks better. Thanks for the write up and the help Simota1. =) Now I need to figure out how I'm going to get the small dent out of my hood.

simota1 09-28-2009 03:55 PM

^^^^ no problem dood :happydance: any time... btw dont forget my rep point? haha

if you try it again try removing the tape when the paint is wet because you will get a cleaner line. When it dries and the paint is also over the tape (overspray) it acts as one piece and when peeling back the tape who knows what will be removed. then apply more tape for the clear coat...

LaSeeno 01-27-2010 12:36 AM

How is the paint holding up from chips?

simota1 01-27-2010 12:55 AM

:D pretty good man.... its holding pretty good.... to the other post above urs man... his right u get a cleaner line when u take it out while the paint is wet....

ctzn 01-30-2010 03:13 PM

Think I might give this a shot today. I have a few scrapes on my bumper so I was planning on getting a new one soon but this will hold me over for a bit...

simota1 01-30-2010 04:02 PM

^^^ go for it bro!!! :D post pics after

ctzn 01-30-2010 06:15 PM

Well I did it, and it didn't exactly turn out perfectly I'm afraid. Masking those curves at each end is quite difficult I must say, and I spent a good amount of time trying to get them perfectly.

After the first coat, I noticed two spots running, and it was due to the recessed areas in the inside of the fangs. As I tried to get up in there it ran in the surrounding areas. After the very first coat I went back over the runny areas with the steel wool, didn't seem to to do much. So I went back over it with a few coats and then the clear coats.

It looks perfectly fine from 10 feet away, but up close it is less than perfect. I am planning on getting some touch up pain for some other chips and once I get it I will try to get a perfect line. The tough bit is that with a white car, every tiny little mistake sticks out like a soar thumb.

I will get some pics later on but I already know I will plan on getting a new bumper (looking in your direction stillen...).

Good write up Simota, def takes patience and a steady hand.

I'm thinking of painting the top plastic part as well so I can remove the holes from the license plate. Any tips on what kind of material should I use to fill the holes with?

This is my experience. Keep in mind, this is my first time ever dealing with paint.

Items I used.

Trash Bags, Satin Black Spray Paint, Clear Coat, masking tape, a Brush, and 1500 grit sand paper.

I use two coats of black and two coats of clear. the hardest thing of this process was taping the damn thing.

Picture 2: The paint/clear coat
Picture 3: First Coat of spray paint
Picture 4&5: 1st and 2nd Coat of clear
Picture 6: My finish project
Picture 7: About to start brushing it.
Picture 8: Brushing fail.
Picture 9: FML, got paint on the side.
