Nice job man! I wish they had those white halos when I did mine. I wouldn't have used a diffuser.

Testing wires and lights after cooking, think I might cook again, I want these babies to be sealed tight.

I know its a bit much but I want to mix it up http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/z...headlight1.jpg http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/z...headlight2.jpg :tiphat: |
Looks good man! just a thought, and I'm not sure it's just the camera phone pics but a little clear coat, some wet sanding and polishing would really make the red on the projector shrouds pop!

resprayed, I really like the super dark grey almost black just what I wanted wanted to be like a black chrome, or gunmetal but this works, think I might do my emblems next to match:happydance: http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/z...ghtrespray.jpg Shrouds with clearcoat http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/z...i/shrouds1.jpg |

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I'm looking to do this soon and I have a few questions.
What sealant/glue would be best suited if the lights need to be opened again after I close them? I've heard some sealants do not loosen up with heat the same way OEM does. Which halos have proven most reliable if correctly installed? Which halos are easiest to install? ( saw issues with tabs and wire connections etc) I'd like to avoid the lime green or yellow rings when the lights are off. Any suggestions on halos? Thanks in advance. |

You're the man as usual! I got ahold of them and got new ones, they said that they burn out from the heat of the sun. Causes them to desolder and detatch from the board.

Sad day,
I was doing a set of lights for a Civic thats being showed at SEMA and the heat gun that started a revelation back when this thread first started just died. Wagner is dead !!!! He was a solid reliable heat gun all the way until his last breath.. R.I.P. Wagner :icon08: I feel like i should bury it or something! |

So,
I have an extra set of lights i use to test ideas out on. Not sure if I saw this already or not. I did this with my turn signal to get crisp bright Demon Eye effect. So i did the same thing with the projector just to see what would happen. WTF am i talking about? Well i had an extra set of 40mm halos from TRS. So i pulled apart the projector and place the halo behind the leans and this is what it looked like. Only had White 40mm, would be awesome with 40mm RGB color changing set. Took the lens out and glued it in 2 spots just to test out what it would look like. http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...16-resized.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...43-resized.jpg Wow, looks like an inner halo inside the lens. Not bad! So I flipped it over with back of halo glued to lens so the light would reflect off the housing. http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...06-resized.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...44-resized.jpg I like it, very strong demon eye, stronger than doing strips (image below) I think I will do this with RGB with color changing remote. So i can do this with the inside of the turn signal and the projecter and have strong Demon Eye Effect. Hope this helps. http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...7-3enenaqe.jpg Rep if you like - Thanks Helpful Links: Glue to reseal lights: OCI Butyl Rubber Glue RGB W/Remote: Morimoto XC LED RGB Halos Angel Eyes . |
You all Z guys wanna be like us BMW guys... SMH
LOL JK awesome write up brotha. Wish I still had my G so I could've done a modified version of this  |
I'm confused. All of the videos you showed wiring them up to the circuit board and leaving them inside the actual headlight but in the thread you wrote to wire them outside of the headlight incase you run into problems and it's a lot easier to fix. Are the video's your newer procedure?

If you have colors halo's or LEDs you can drive with them on day or night. So most people will wire them to a external (outside the light) ground and power source so they can put them on a switch inside the car or engine bay. Guy's that do a lot of shows or cars for coffee, were there parked. Hope this helps |
Oh okay thanks! Your videos helped a lot just scared to crack them open. I know the wiring and painting is easy for me but one broken headlight = $$$ that I could've spent getting them done haha

I would recommend against this mod until we find solution to the switching. I spoke with DatsunFTW this morning. He is using a LED Turn signal bulb and the switch doesn't seem to work correctly. I am using stock light bulb and it works. But starting to stick on one or the other color. Hard to see all this when your driving. |
Like Nut_N_Much said, the amber strip of the assembly is a bit buggy. I tried it out on my own Z to make sure everything worked and the amber was the only light lighting up with the turn signal. and this was with an LED turn signal bulb. When I put in the factory bulb, the flashing was not synchronized.
So as a way around it, I told my friend I would only leave the white strip wired in and leave the amber alone. Unless we hear something new from the company, I wouldn't trust the amber just yet. But I really like the way these turned out. I am tempted to try the same on my Z but I have a whole big project for my own that will involve some "reshaping" of the housing with some nice 3D printing involved :driving: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8622/...456d7cb7_b.jpg10974452_10204821413509570_6750185517596665638_o by datsunpride, on Flickr |
Looks awesome man, great job.. I finished a Civic and Lexus today been in garage all day. Almost ready for the next project.. Glad you got them together. Thet are tight when you set shroud in lens.

I appreciate what you folks are doing to help us save a little money for other mods! I have a question(s)...does the one with the clear looking lens just a cover for the white looking one...if so where do I purchase the cover? and if not whats the difference as far as quality? I like the one with the clear cover on there is it will look more oe imho THANKS again! Attachment 100512 Attachment 100513 |

No need for the clear lenses anymore unless you like the look. |

Thanks for the reply!! If I decided to go with the clear lenses where would I go for them? are the clear lens brighter or reduces the brightness(I perfer brighter). If I purchase the halos(pic below) including the color changing remote would it be a plug and play type deal or would I have to tinker with it? And I'm assuming the control module will have to be outside the lens right? I'm asking a few questions since I don't want to mess this up. I'll rep u up when I figure how to do so. Thank you tons! Are you guys trying to use the switchback function to deactivate the DRL while turn signals are active, or does it alternate in between flashes?
I never messed with switch back, so I'm just curious. |
anybody have any opinions on this one?
Audi Style Switchback White Amber LED Strips For Headlights Retrofit I'm gonna start doing a new set of headlights soon and I wanna try some different stuff out. I'd like to do something that not a lot of people have done, but it's hard for me to find anything remotely original lol. |

those led strips are all the same. sames ones i tried before and they are hit or miss. make sure you check the soldering on the wires because i noticed they are weak and wires break off. i have them on my car and have ben working good for almost a year now but ive installed some where leds go out or the wires break off.
|
Thanks guys. I thought it would be nice looking to have the whole outer edge of the headlight outlined in led light and this seems long enough. I'd really like to get a frosted piece of plastic fabbed up with a crap load of bright leds underneath it to light the whole thing up, similar to this...
http://media.caranddriver.com/images...s-1280x782.jpg but that would take some decent coin and time. I was hoping to get these headlights done by Zdayz so I could show them off lol. Side note, are any of you guys gonna be there? I love meeting all the forum peeps over a handle of Fireball :) |
Good luck with the project
Not heading to Z days. Summers are to busy with the triathlon coaching business. LMK if you head through Chicagoland |
In my opinion this is absolutely the most detailed diy thread on this forum. If it wasn't for everyone in this thread I wouldn't feel confident opening up my own headlights. I just have a few question I didn't see answer.
1) when heating your headlights in a box should you put a wet towel under the headlight like if you were using an oven? 2) with all your experience would you say that paint or vinyl wrap is more reliable. ( which holds up to heat better) also is the vinyl wrap easy to put on with all the curves inside the headlight. 3) lastly with the rubber glue sealant from the retrofit source I noticed it comes rolled up pretty thick. Do you recommend putting it on as is or stretching it out and applying it a little skinnier. Thanks For all the helps guys ( especially nut n much and Vdc off) I really appreciate this thread. |
I've got two customer headlights to work on over the weekend and with morimoto's new XSB model switchback/DRL function Halos. Can't wait to mess around with these and possibly order myself a set

2) Paint. Unless you are a master of the wrap like VDC-Off, you will have a hard time. 3) Stretch it out a bit to fit nicely in the grooves but not too thin :tiphat: |
Thanks Datsun I just got the xsb. Please post pics of how you chose to wire them it'd be very helpful.

Dont use vinyl. It gets soft with heat and our headlights gets hot. Recently tried it with 3m primer and edge sealer and it still showed some bubbling.
Also Datsun, youll have to dremel sand those little tabs for our cars. Not hard but just another step to add. Also guys, if ordering from theretrofit, order some Xchange relays switchbacks. Its not good to just run leds to the parking light because leds fail with heat and the Xchange will switch off the leds when the low beam turns on. This will save you from having to replace them soon for leds going out. |

So I'm trying something new. I've seen and read a lot about hydro dipping but I've never had anything done with it personally, so I dropped off my shrouds with someone who does it professionally, I'm getting carbon fiber hydro dip with a white background that will show through in part of it, so it will basically be white and black weave. Should look pretty sweet. Going with dual projectors, RGB halos inside for demon eyes, and trs switchbacks on all four housings. I'll delete the turn signal bulb and just use the switchbacks as turn signals. All black housings with the CF hydro dip, I'm thinking its gonna look pretty sweet.
