So.. I'm planning on cracking open my headlights tomorrow and paint them. I've read this whole thread and others, some people say no need to prep others say scuff then paint with krylon fusion, scuff then use automotive primer then use X type of paint. In short I'm confused!! I want to do this once and do it right.. So what are the steps I should use to get a durable and lasting end result?? Help me guys!! :tiphat:
|
You might not need to scuff it, but I would just to be safe. Then use Krylon Fusion and you're good to go

If I were painting them myself, I would hit them with some 1000 grit sand paper at least. Then use a primer, and then whatever paint you're going to use. Like you said, do it once!

Just in case anyone is curious, I got the flat mount less that VDC suggested and they look pretty good. They just came in yesterday so obviously I haven't installed them yet, but I hooked them up to a 9v battery just to see how they looked, and they were plenty bright.
I'm going to use these white ones for interior footwell lighting to be hooked up with the map lights so that when they come on automatically (unlock the car, open the door) the footwells will light up as well. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/28/qarape3y.jpg This is one red led, I'll have two red and two blue leds in each projector (going with the dual projector look) http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/28/ba2a4ane.jpg And finally I hooked up the halos to a 9v as well just for fun, they're super bright. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/28/ygenyjup.jpg You like how my leg is all weird shaped? Yeah, motorcycle accident. Blah. Zdayz 2014!! |
Couple of shots how it's going to look with the red lens retainer ring

That red retainer ring is a nice touch.
|
Can we get another few shots of the red retainer ring? Thinking about doing this to my car.

Sorry man! I just took them back apart today. You'll have to wait a few weeks. I'm exchanging my XBs for the new ones and have some fabricating to do on the diffusers and then they all go back together. When I do get them back together though you can count on getting some good pics here. :) |
I got news from Rhetrofitsource that their batch of new XBs that weren't yellowish when off were bad and they won't have them. So I ordered a smaller 60mm halo for the flasher and am going to try something else so they don't look yellow or just decide to live with it.
I also changed up the demon eyes. I thought the heat might get to the strip LEDs in the reflective shroud so I moved them in the projector housing just behind the lens http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/08/3enenaqe.jpg I cut the strip down to 3 LEDS and it turned out REALLY nice. No cutting or drilling. Just the 3m tape and a little epoxy to secure it. I wired it up and out of a vent in the housing. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/08/my2emy2u.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/08/8apybe4u.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/08/ehude8yt.jpg I ended up putting some shrink wrap on the wires where they pull through the housing for extra protection later. |
They are really turning out great! Can't wait to finish up with the halo debacle!

Great job on the paint, looks smooth!

DIY: LED Halo w/Video's
Got the main set of halos installed today. I took VDC's lead and cut fabbed up the diffuser from mart to work. Thanks for the tip!!!

Then I'll put those together and install the flasher halos |
Nice work, I love to see all these great minds keep improving and coming up with new ideas. That red ring inside is awesome.

Thx! I'm really liking how it's turning out. It was a lot of work fabricating those diffusers though. Still worth it! They put a good finishing touch on the XBs. |
Awesome. Dont forget to add glue to the inside of the diffusers. I did have a set fall off inside the headlight before and I had to redo it.
|
So I'm thinking about instead of doing demon eyes, having the halo be purple. How do you think this would work? I saw in some of the links, they have purple halos.
|
Dont see why not
|
I say go for it!

For dual Halo's could you just tap the turn signal halo wires into the main projector halo, then connect the main projector halo wires to the parking light?

Great thread! Made doing these myself super easy. Thanks a lot! Now just gotta fix the hyper flash. Any suggestions? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
My project has been taking a while! I've tried a lot of new things and had a lot of fun testing things out! Finally ready to put them back together.
I'd like to report wiring a little different than the DIY vid. I soldered my wires right to the circuit board and taped them up to the other wires on the board to secure them. Like this http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/17/qa5e5ana.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/17/agymemy4.jpg |
Here's some quick phone pics how they turned out. I snapped them before testing on the car this morning. I'll get some better pics when I re seal them and put them back on the car

Looks sharp.
|
Looks good but it looks like they sent you two different versions of the halos. They did that to me and I had redo a customers car :(

Lovin the color strips in the projector, looks clean. Been working like crazy lately but working on something different.
I have double halo going into the Main Projector. XB white for the outer and blue for inner halo. Also trying out the XB Strip. Together with the Halo for daytime driving should be cool look. Waiting for package, will post pics next weekend. Here is the strip: Morimoto XB LED Strips - Accessories from The Retrofit Source Inc It will match the intensity of the XB Halo's.. http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...-xb-strips.png |
Cool, where exactly are you putting the strip?
|
Under the shroud across the front. It will give a nice glow around the edge of the shroud.
|
Hummm, haven't see this before..

Well, it's been a wile. I wanted to try something new so I did!
I got a set of damaged lights off ebay and used the parts to update my lights. I had two 60 & 80mm blue halo's. I bought them a size smaller to mount them inside the lights. I still have 90mm XB's for day time driving, but my blue halo's are inside. The color is amazing!!!! Also took a flexible light strip that runs as Daytime and Turn-signal light. Came out awesome.. Take a look ! http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-New-Gener...ba15b9&vxp=mtr http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...e-turn-sig.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...330-131607.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...67-daytime.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...330-162553.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/nut_n...0mm-inside.jpg Came out better than I thought it would.. The strip glows evenly and doesn't show LED,s. Cool look.. I did take off the G35 lens conversion and replaced it with the stock turn signal cover. Used the new shrouds painted flat black with gloss black trim. I'll get better pictures tomorrow when she is out and about. Also finally got my VS2 SEIBON Carbon Fiber Hood w/scoop. Defiantly two man job to mount it so it didn't get put on the car this weekend. Sorry. |
Oh man that's awesome. Hey want to do my lights again? Lol
|
Those look great!!! I want to break mine open again now!!! Lol
|
do you have any pics from a distance? on and off? that strip looks effin sweet!!!
|
Looks great, I didn't know they were that flexible
|
I want to open mine up and do this before ZDayZ now....
so much to do and so little time |
Awesome find. I've been trying to find a product that makes a solid strip like that. Can't believe all of that is in one headlight! Good job. Ordering now!!
