Yes you will need to get one, glad to see a few companies working on this now.
I am sure you could have one wrapped easily, but my concern would be that with a harness it will scratch it and loose that nice look where as paint or powder coating will hold up better probably.

You're right, screw that idea. How about different color options other than the purple? I cant see my car rocking that color I would probably do a Takata green or just leave it silver to match the interior accents.
