I set the pre-load with the strut/shock. I install the spring and tighten the perch up. Then I raise that 3/8 of an inch and then line the bottom of the strut up with the hole which would set preload.
The issue here is with all the weight I reduced it seems I had to go maxxed out low on the spring and when it's in the perch BEFORE pre-load is set it can wiggle about a 1/4 inch. Normally the spring would not be able to move up and down. So I set extra pre-load on the spring and it's snug but I've never encountered needing to go max lowering like this.
