"Squishy" pedal might be due to air in the system. Explain this "jerking" when you go for a hard stop. Was ABS engaged? What kind of surface?

Upgrading your pads to one with a higher operating temperature wouldn't help much in your case. A set of stainless steel-braided brake lines would improve pedal feel but they would not make your car stop faster.
