The "jerking" is likely caused by uneven rotor surfaces; machining or replacement might be needed. Do a few hard braking when it's safe to do so, engage the ABS when possible. If you had no problem engaging ABS at any temperature, then the next one is tires. Stickier tires would help shorten stopping distances.
