Spend a little more and get the Type-R Component set. Look on ebay and you can get a set pretty cheap. They are efficient enough to run quite well from deck power even. You will be much happier with them. Coaxial speakers are a compromise at best. They are fine for the rears but do not use them for your front stage. Your music will sound like its coming from the floor of the car.

- I'd almost say going with coaxials will be a downgrade from stock. The stock speakers with an after market deck will probably sound better.

Rear speakers are not a waste! They add quite a bit of additional volume in the car plus when you play DVD audio disks you get full surround sound. Very Cool!!

Plus I like rear fill but its not for everybody.

Just make sure you cross them over high. They wont take much bass. I run my rears from my headunit and it crosses them at 250Hz
I noticed with the factory base radio, when you set the fader to the rear that there is no sound. Does that mean that there is no "rear" speakers hooked up to the deck? Is there wires from the factory deck to the speakers location behind the seats? If yes, I am thinking about putting 3.5" speakers there.

DO not worry about rear speakers there is no reason what so ever to put little dinky speakers back there. Save your money and put it towards better fronts. They are a waste in the Z and with them being so small they will start distorting sooner than your fronts. It will sound 10 times better with better fronts and no rears than good rears and fronts. This has been discussed numerous times on other threads. And to the other question YES get the ones with tweeters that are separate.

As I said in another thread

Honestly in top end cars there are no rear speakers because SQ "sound quality" is setup for optimal performance. I own a civic and I have taken the rear speakers out so that way I have no rear fill as they call it. If you listen to it for a few days you will get use to it and it will definitely sound better than 4 channels. Think of it this way artist record there music in 2 channel format so the optimum way to listen to it is threw 2 channels. My setup is going to be my fronts and a rear sub that's all. After thinking about it and listening to it it sounds way better. So in a nut shell do not get rear speakers or worry about it.

The base ones are at least 2", definitely bigger than 1".

I also think that we might be able to shoehorn a 6x9 in the front door. That black plastic housing that the speaker mounts to looks like it could be adapted to fit them.

Believe me there 1 inch after cutting out them and putting a new 1 inch tweeter in its place there 1 inch. The basket might be slightly bigger.

The tweeters are *not* 1in.

The entire tweeter is 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"

The cone is roughly 2 1/4 in diameter. I have my stock tweeter & my tape measure in front of my as I type this.

When I upgraded, the 1" aftermarket tweeters required a 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" piece of delrin with a 2" hole cutout for the replacements.

Ya the ENTIRE tweeter holder but the actual tweeter is only a inch maybe a bit more. I mean I cut the tweeter out and dropped a 1 inch tweeter right in its place. But yes the entire holder is like 2 3/4

A nice surprise when you pull the trim out and find no speaker to replace...
