Nexus 7 2012 Install

So I've had this concept of a tablet install for a about a year now. I was originally going to do it on my Eclipse but I ending up selling it and bought a Z. I have the base model Z, no nav. I really don't like Nav's that come with cars because usually they are slow and just not intuitive like an Android tablet. Plus with the tablet I can do a lot more.

There's a few threads on how to do this. The biggest issue was powering it. You can use hardwire to ignition, but the cigarette lighter underneath the glove box allows for a 90% stealth install. There are minimal wires exposed. Since I am using the stock headunit my AUX port is on the front. That wire can be hidden to the rear aux port when I install my Pioneer Double Din HU.

If you plan on keeping the brightness all the way up with Wifi and GPS on, you need to get a 2.0+ AMP car charger. Normal dollar tree car charger won't have enough amps to keep those things powered for long. I bought this one on Amazon for $12. Two ports, 2.0 Amps on each port. Its small and not very noticeable.

Next thing was use an Android app called tasker to automate a few things. When it senses power it will turn the brightness all the way on, change screen time out to 23 hours, turn on wifi, greet me, and start playing music. When it senses the powers been disconnected it will stop music, turn off wifi, turn brightness all the way down, set screen timeout to 7 seconds. Now its takes awhile to program that, mainly because when you turn on the car it sends power, then goes off and then finally turns on. Its just how the ignition works in our cars. So I created a variables to store the power state and made the profile wait 2 seconds before executing anything to verifying the correct we are in the correct power state. Pm if you need help or want the profile. Here's a pic. I will update with video how it all works later today.

Looks good...I've got a Nexus 7 that I'd love to mount in the cubby as well.
I've been following the work being done by forum member Itullos.

Which Pioneer HU are you going to use?
I've been looking at the AVIC-8000NEX.

I think we'd all like to see more pics and that video when you get a chance.

I used a RAM mount for smaller tablets, some eggcrate soft foam glued to the back and velcro to attach it to the 370 cubby door. It is removable and does not scar the door.

Check out https://timur.mobi/ and pick up an OTG cable. You'll be happy you did.

I have a Nexus 7 2013 I custom installed in my Red Frontier (after some relocation/fabrication) and I specifically waited for this kernel to be released to do it. Turns the tab on and off with the car and goes into deep sleep which lasts for days, then wakes up instantly. The kernel + OTG allows you to charge at AC speed so there's no issue running everything at full. I also use tasker to go full brightness during the day and auto at night. While also setting media volume to full when on AC, etc. For temp installs the really cool feature is when the OTG cable is unplugged, the tablet functions as normal.

4wd controls and deck both shifted down a spot, which was a VERY lucky fit.

FWIW I also run off the same Anker charger, as you can see I have two. Love all their products so far.

I need to take better pictures but haven't gone back to do so since it was done. LOVE it though. Same is destined for my Z once I decided on how I want to do it. I like to retain the stereo so you have a hardware volume knob and radio. So the stock stereo location is taken so the cubby is going to see the tablet most likely.

At 200$ there's no better value for the functionality you get.
