Sub box suggestions!

Hey guys. my car is at the shop of Zenclosures for them to make some custom boxes for the 370z! i was just wondering if you all had some suggestions for them (i.e. what setup you would like to see offered). Mike at Zenclosures can pretty much do anything, and he has a great set of ideas already of what to make. I look forward to see what he comes up with. If u have any ideas...post em so i can relay it him! thanks

Hey guys. after heavy contemplation, i decided NOT to go with the spare tire well box. I simply drive wayy to much, and i know the minute i take it out, i will get a flat. SO, with that said, Mike at Zenclosures made a box for my 2 10s that sits right behind the strut brace. He has created many awesome designs, but he is becoming a sponsor here soon enough, and he will be able to talk about all of his products more.
so without further ado, here is my box...great build quality, excellent fittings. Im more than pleased with the setup. It in no way affects rear vision...only my hearing

i think i will go for 2 subs in the spare tire well. looks flush, theres plenty of room, and i dont compromise on cargo space.

I'd like to see something similar to Tyler's (customboxman) but with an amp stage/rack. Maybe a 10" on one side and the amp on the other. Oh and not MDF but Fiberglass

A LOT of guys want to retain their trunk space and not remove/drive around with no spare, so.............. a box that sits down inside the spare tire itself, than can house an 8" or a 10" would be great. There are a few slimline/thinline subs out now in both 8" and 10", Pioneer comes to mind, as well as JL I believe. This would sell a lot of boxes!

I too have thought about the option of a fiberglass enclosure that would fit inside the spare tire itself. It seems an 8-inch sub should have enough space for fit as well as air space. I've not researched this though.

Another option I'm even more interested in would be just like the ones zenclosures is making for 10 and 12-inch subs but for the newer 8-inch subs that seem to work exceptionally well. I was in a car audio shop last week and listened to a few different mounted subs, single 8, single 10 and single 12. The one I thought sounded best by far was a little 8-inch Kicker in a custom made box that was slot ported. The smaller sub is lighter, less expensive and requires a smaller, less expensive amp to run. This could also simplify wiring since some bigger subs are best run with a separate, dedicated sub (mono) amp. The smaller sub would also require a smaller airspace so the box would take up less of our cargo space and weigh less. Although I do want better sound quality, this is still a sports car and I think most of us would prefer adding no more weight than necessary. 12" subs and high power amps are stinking heavy!

To qualify some of my opinions, I don't listen to rap or hip hop. I like Led Zeppelin, Badlands, Boston, ZZ Top, Rainbow, Joe Satrianni, Queensryche, Gary Moore, Van Halen, Dio, The Cult... you get the picture. I'm betting the 30 Hz frequencies produced by today's high performance 8" subs is plenty low for my listening. After all, this is a very small cockpit to fill with omnidirectional low frequency sound.

I'm interested in the opinions of others on this subject (especially other rockers). Was it the ported enclosure design that made this little 80.00 sub sound so good? I've read that sealed boxes provide a tighter, more responsive bass sound and are also generally smaller than ported boxes.

What about best brands of subs for rock? This inexpensive little Kicker 8" impressed me but I am impressed with the engineering and design philosophy of the Polk MM840DVC. I haven't heard one mounted but they look like serious quality for the money and the explaination of thier design is convincing (I work as a tech writer for our aircraft maintenance engineering department).

I agree, a good 8" sub is usually tight and fast, and 30HZ is plenty low enough for rock, blues, and contempory jazz listening. One of the members here fabricated a box that fits down inside the spare tire itself. I also believe one of the guys that posts here, and is a big installer in Atlanta did one as well. It can be done, and with the right 8 or 10 should sound great. I need the trunk space AND my spare

I would agree with the above posts - I would love to find a box that would fit inside the spare tire itself (retaining the spare tire). I have seen on here that someone did a custom box inside the spare with two 6.5 inch kickers. Supposedly that sounded good as well.

Additionally, what about the area in the cavity just in front of the spare tire below the strut bar (i.e. where some people place their amps). I have my amp under the passenger seat, so I would also like to see an enclosure that will fit there.

Hope this thread materializes into something! Boxes that take up valuable trunk room or generic rectangle boxes seem to be a dime a dozen - even for our cars.

Quickly eyeballing the space where the spare tire is there should be plenty of volume for a 12" single. Rather than building a box you would want to mask off the bottom a fiberglass to the shape of the bottom. You could still build braces inside but the fiberglass molded will give you maximum volume. Just be sure to use a heavy duty grill

No spare tire - isn't that what roadside assistance is for?

This could be an idea that sounds better than what it's worth but here it is anyway. Like Jon was saying, I have also thought about the space that everyone has been putting their amps. In the case that you wanted to retain space and spare, we could build a custom MDF box to maybe put like 2-3 8" subs in that area. I think that as long as it was 2 separate chambers, the area offers plenty of sealed volume and plenty of room. The ony issue I see would be figuring out a way the aesthetically cut the foam piece that covers that area. What do you guys think?
