Do I need a dash kit for a DNX6960 in my NISMO?

I put my 9960 in first without a kit and had the small gap that AK spoke of. I bought a Metra kit off of a guy here and installed

I honestly liked it better without the kit. I can post pictures of both tonight to show you the difference.
