A proper stereo install is 100% plug and play and fully reversible; any mutilation of the factory harness is just shoddy work and unacceptable.

When properly done (not that difficult with the proper tools), tapping into on/off lines is not a big deal. You don't have to be much of an Electrician to make a reliable tap/splice.
