A gps can not always distinguish everything you are trying to make it say. But if you know you can make a U turn do it. It will try telling you to make a U turn for 2 reasons one because it is safe to do so and will stop telling you if you ignore it. That being said you can still make a U turn. If you know that your going to be able to make one do it the gps will know you turned around. GPS are helpful not fool prof.
