Default New Headunit, no power??

I purchased a double din JVC headunit and a set of component speakers from Crutchfield. I got the speakers wired in (new speaker wires bypassing the factory wiring) and hooked up the headunit and it will not power on.

I plugged the OEM unit back in and it was fine. I have checked and double checked the wiring. I thought it might be the METRA harness so I tapped directly into the factory harness, no luck. I thought it might be the headunit or its harness so I ran to Bestbuy and bought an identical unit to try and still no luck.

I checked the two fuses under the dash that said "audio" and both were good. I checked the 15 amp fuse labeled "audio" under the hood and it was blown. Replaced it with the adjacent fuse (convertible top, which I don't have) still no luck.

Not sure what else to check, getting a little frustrated. I have done numerous audio installs before and never had a problem.

Are there any safety/theft interlocks to prevent it from powering on? It should power on with just power, ground and illumination wires connected, correct?

Any help is appreciated.

Digital voltmeter handy???? If not, pull unit, and wire on bench to 12 v battery, see if it powers up. Most have a reset button hidden somewhere, you can try that. If it doesn't power up on bench, I'd say your SOL. Return to place of purchase. Did you contact crutchfield??? they have awesome customer service....

I know you said you replaced the HU with an identical unit already but did you check the fuse on the back of the BU?

Finally got it working. Both the 12v constant and the 12v switched wires on the head unit had to be connected to the 12v switched on the factory harness. I've never seen that before.

Make sure that is correct, it doesn't sound right. If that's how it's connected you're relying on the head unit's memory to save the settings instead of the cars constant power. All head units should have a switched and constant 12 volt.

You are right. I don't think it's correct, but it's the only way I could get it to work. I need to get a new multimeter and check the constant 12v from the car. I think that may be the problem. I have checked all fuses though.

It remembers most settings but defaults to an odd station when I power it on no matter what it was on when I shut it off. That has been the only problem so far. Still working on a tablet install so I will be checking it again within the next few days.

No no no, there is no need for that when the harness has it built into the car.

Ended up being a bad fuse to the 12v constant. Couldn't really visually see it was bad but replaced all the ones labeled audio and it worked.
