Default back up camera

Hi guys I am trying to install the back up camera finally.. I had the double din aftermarket radio installed a year ago but i was too lazy to get the camera working

I ordered this camera

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o01_s00

So I am going to just replace the license plate light housing with this one.

to power up the camera, i am planning to connect it to the reverse light.
I watched these two youtube videos for it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mmrKIn1K2M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nPvPkVc8ro
In the reverse light, what color of the wire do i want to tap?
also for the camera, do i just connect the video feed to the double din radio?
Since I am powering up using the reverse light, I don't need to give (connect anything) the reverse gear signal on my radio right?

Also, what kind of wire pull do I use? I don't have one and I am planning to buy one from amazon.com, any recommendations? I am not sure how i am going to fish the av/power wires of the camera but I will try to figure it out...

Lastly, is this good wire connector?
http://www.amazon.com/Gardner-Bender...ire+connectors
or any recommendations?

Thanks a bunch!!

I just installed this camera over the weekend (pretty decent for $15). I ended up extending the power cable with some additional wire and tapping into a switched aux power in the center console. I plugged in the video cable to the dedicated port on my pioneer headunit and connected that side of the small red wire to the reverse gear signal of the wiring harness. The other side of the small red wire I tapped into the orange reverse cable in the hatch (ran cables from license thru grommit on right side of hatch). If you can, test wire with multimeter. This setup allows for it to switch to backup camera in reverse as well as at will with headunit camera button (if applicable).

If you just want to have the backup camera turn on with reverse you don't need to connect to the reverse gear signal. I carefully routed my wires with a hanger/electrical tape & just used a simple wire stripper:

I'd recommend soldering if you can, takes a little while longer, but a much stronger connection. Otherwise a lot of ppl use butt connectors.

Hey thanks for the reply. I will just connect the backup camera power to the orange wire so that it only turns on when I put it in reverse, should I also connect the reverse gear signal to the orange wire? or is that unnecessary?

I am going to do this on Friday...hopefully it works! Should I disconnect the negative terminal of the battery?

Yes the reverse gear signal wire on the head unit needs to be wired to the cars reverse wire. Without it your head unit has no way to know that you are going into reverse and the video feed will not automatically be displayed.

pL4tiNumfi5t can you clarify the exact location of the orange wire for ID purposes? Is it a "solid" orange wire? Thanks!

I have a pioneer unit as well and would like to use the reverse camera feature while driving...if I understood you correctly?

To connect the rear view camera you have to do the following;

1) You have to connect the positive (red) power wire of the camera to both the reverse light within the tail light and to the reverse output signal of the head unit (pink wire). Yes you are tapping the same red wire into 2 places.

2) You have to connect the ground (black) power wire of the camera to the chassis of the car ( I hooked it up on the rear where a bunch of ground wires are already connected).

3) You have to connect the RCA cable (yellow) wire of the camera to the camera input located behind the headunit.

But there are TWO red wires that need to be connected near the hatch area (I'm good @ the head unit)

One with the Yellow video RCA (bit thicker gauge red wire)
One on the power unit (thin red wire spooled with the black ground)

Sorry...that's what has me a bit confused when you mentioned tapping a singular wire???

I am guessing the thin red should be connected to the ignition/switch power
Thicker red to reverse signal lamp or the "orange wire" option as previously mentioned?

BTW THANK YOU for the quick response.

The yellow gauge wire must connect to the head unit and the camera, yes.. That is the RCA cable.

The red wire must be connected into two places. One is the reverse light within the taillights.. So that means either find the wire by opening the taillight or research it. Then using the same red wire that gets connected to the pink wire behind the headunit. Remember the headunit needs a signal to be sent that the REVERSE TAILS are on so it will SWITCH the headunit screen to the camera everytime you engage the gear into reverse. The RCA cable is what supplies the video.

The BLACK wire is just ground and must be grounded.

Now I don't know which camera that is, but my camera had all wires separate. That makes the installation easier.

Let me know if that helps.

The wire was in the bundle that runs across the back of the hatch coming from the left taillight. You'll have to stick your head in to look under, it's near the top. I believe it was the solid orange one. I actually tapped into a similar looking wire first try, but just taped it back up (think there are two).
Yeah, it's nice to switch to camera view while driving. Good Luck
