I test I feel that tests sidewall stiffness pretty well is a quick jerk of the steering wheel at a speed of about 50mph. Ideally, the car responds closest to instantaneously to any input, and any "lagging" or "slowness to respond" is indicative of a soft sidewall. When I had all season RE970AS all the way around on my car, I felt a hugely noticeable lag in input to my steering, compared to the stock RE050A's.

After switching the fronts to the S-04 PP's, the lag is reduced hugely. The tail of the car has a super slight lag, but it's the price I pay for requiring a higher treadwear.

That being said, my friend's car with RE-11 all the way around truly feels like he's driving on a set of roller coaster rails - it can't be beat.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this test!

Had new Hankooks installed on the front yesterday. That took care of the problem for me. No tramlineing or jerkiness at all. As I said in an earlier post, I guess I should have spent the money and changed all four at the same time. Now everything feels normal again.
