Scratched Wheel Woes....

Drove into my local bank's drive thru today, and wouldn't you know that as I was pulling out I did a real bang up job scratching the driver's front wheel.:shakes head:

I'm so pissed at myself for doing this... Up 'til now I've been really happy with the fact that my wheels were completely scratch free.

Now I have to look into purchasing a replacement wheel. Any direction you all might be able to give me on getting this replaced would be appreciated. I considered the option of getting it repaired, but I think I'll feel better if it's replaced. After the fact I might work on the damaged wheel myself to see what I can do with it.

FML:mad:

Post a close up picture of the damage. I bet someone here can tell you if it will be easy to fix or not.

azn370z 08-10-2011 01:09 PM

They can fix it so it looks brand new. You should ask in your local forum. a local guy got his volks repaired for only a couple hundred dollars and it looked pretty good to me.

happytheman 08-10-2011 01:14 PM

Will take pics and post up this evening. Will also post in local forum. Let's hope I can get this taken care of because it's (as you can imagine) really grating on my nerves.

370zproject 08-10-2011 01:22 PM

i hoped a curb first yr i had mine not to bad of damage im just to lazy to go get it fiixed lol

kenchan 08-10-2011 01:32 PM

happytheman-sorry to hear. :(

hope you get this taken care soon. :)

happytheman 08-10-2011 01:37 PM

Yeah, you aren't the only one that's sorry! I'm still smarting over it... :(

vividracing 08-10-2011 01:47 PM

It can be repaired, and usually pretty cheap. A local drifter let some chick drift his car at an event and she turned a VOLK GT-F into... Well, idk what it looked like but it was fugly. It was beyond destroyed.

1 week later he had a brand new looking wheel on his car :)

BeachZTT 08-10-2011 01:53 PM

Sorry happy! I did a minor rash on the front passanger side Work VSSX on my TT...shortly after I spent a month tearing them down, refinishing them, and putting them back together. I just wasn't paying attention in front of my own house.

All of the repairs I have seen done have been excellent. You will have it back to 100% before you know it.

optiontrader 08-10-2011 02:07 PM

Please post pics once u get them - I know I'm due to do this down the road...

happytheman 08-10-2011 02:16 PM

^Will do.

Sorry to hear you've got similar woes. :(

Edit: Oh wait...are you saying you anticipate to join in on the overwhelming fun of curb rash, and don't necessarily have any instances of it yet?? If so...well sir, you are either a realist or a pessimist by nature aren't you? :)

At some point, we all do it.

What really pizzed me off was I did it again to the same wheel about a week after getting it repaired. Happened at the airport parking garage pay booth at 1:00 am after a west coast flight.

You will be amazed at what a good wheel repair guy can do.

zmyride 08-10-2011 04:26 PM

This is why I practices with cones. When I first got my Z, I keep feeling the car is wide. Granted I owned 4 bangers, but even when I had my 280z, I didn't have this problem until I driven the 370z. Even the G didn't "feel" so wide.

Ok, so here's a couple of shots...certainly not DSLR quality like some...so forgive me!:tiphat:

Let me know what you think.

Csquared 08-10-2011 08:13 PM

Looks like an easy fix, should come out looking brand new!

BeachZTT 08-10-2011 08:21 PM

Yep, from some of the ones I have seen repaired that is pretty mild.

KillerBee370 08-10-2011 08:38 PM

My wheels are STILL relatively scratch free (I bumped a glossy painted curb in a parking structure once and left a half inch rub which I just painted myself since my wheels are black)

I guess this is largely due to the fact that:

a. I'm the ONLY one who drives my car and,

b. I always park a foot or so away from anything :ugh:

happytheman 08-10-2011 08:41 PM

Oh nice! That's really good news! Tell me...would any of you consider taking this repair to the stealership?

Hell no! They have a guy that goes around in a mobile wheel fix van. For sure that will be cheaper.

(I'm sure they have someone like that in your area as well)

happytheman 08-10-2011 09:01 PM

Hmm, how convenient! I will definitely check into that! I'm sure if one was good at it, he/she could make a buck or two at that in consideration that nearly everyone scrapes their wheels.

From your pictures, I'd say you have nothing to worry about. I took a chunk out of two spokes on my G, and after the repair, you couldn't tell anything ever happened.

As far as going to the dealer, they are just going to call the same guy you could and add a mark-up to it. That's not being a "stealership", that's just business.

happytheman 08-11-2011 06:18 AM

Okay, one last question: Does the tire need to be removed for repair of the wheel?

If so, I need to be a little more particular about who performs the work. I certainly don't need more damage to the wheel than there already is!:ugh2:

No need to remove the tire for repair. In fact, they repaired my wheel both times in my driveway.

BeachZTT 08-11-2011 06:59 AM

Happy, check out the top video on this page...

Alloy wheel repair link

happytheman 08-11-2011 05:54 PM

Beach - thanks for the recommendation! I have reached out to the local mobile repair representative just now to see what kind of qoute he can drum up for me! I'll keep you guys updated!

shadoquad 08-11-2011 05:57 PM

I think they're lying to you, happy.

Just to show you what a true friend I am, I'll trade you my 18" base wheels straight up for your damaged-beyond-recognition 19" sports wheels.

I just don't think you're gonna find this kind of offer anywhere. :stirthepot:

jk, I'm glad it should be repairable.

tjlazer 08-11-2011 06:24 PM

yeah I would not bother getting a new wheel. That is minor damage and can be repaired easy. If you buy a new wheel it can happen again and you would be pissed again. Just get it fixed, in a year or so you will have knics, scratches even when being really careful! I have no curbage on mine, but I do have several rock chips and some scratches that I have no idea how they got there! Just wear and tear I guess...

We got your back... Quad's offer looks good though!

happytheman 08-11-2011 08:06 PM

Oh Quad! How wonderful of you to provide me with such an opportunity! The chance to have even more lightweight (but still forged) wheels is nearly irresistible! But alas, I fear the cumbersome cost of shipping that I might incur may far outweigh (and not quite offset) the cost of a repair! I suppose I will never know the true joy of shaving time off my 1/4 mile.... :crying:

kenchan 08-11-2011 08:40 PM

ouch... but yah, that's a typical repair most wheel repair shops deal with so you can probably get that fixed. :)

Definitely a realist - life's too short to be a pessimist at heart. ;) I've got my curb rash coming - just a question of when. Besides, the wife's driving the car sometimes now.

Thanks for the pics - judging from the all opinions here, should be a relatively easy fix!

happytheman 08-12-2011 05:39 PM

You're welcome for the pics! Well, not saying that your wife is a crappy driver or anything (hell, I screwed up too), but having an additional driver increases the likeliness somewhat doesn't it?:ugh2:

FromG2Z 08-13-2011 11:01 PM

Happy, that is nothing. U will be fixed in no time. My first brand new car, a 2001 acura integra, I curbed shortly after getting it....in a bank parking lot. I never knew about wheel repair at that time :(

EazyD 08-14-2011 12:27 AM

How much is a repair? I only have 1-inch marks so probably won't repair...but still curious.. :)

happytheman 08-14-2011 02:56 AM

I got an email back from the mobile repair outfit, and they said that my damage was definitely repairable and would run me between $125-$150. I say that's a steal if it turns out well, when compared to the $750 that a new wheel would run me!

Thanks for the recommend, Beach! I will be setting an appt. with this outfit hopefully this week and will be sure to let you know more soon!

BeachZTT 08-14-2011 06:57 AM

Glad to help! Fingers crossed. :tiphat:
