That's got TireRack written all over them. How much $$?

Anyway, they were $1,380.00 delivered. No tax and I will mount and balance them myself for free (actually it will cost me the lunch I need to buy for the guy who lets me use his shop after hours). |
Sweet, tire porn! I am very interested to hear your thoughts on these, they have very positive reviews so far but those are few and far between.

Is it me or the tire got some weird bulge on it? Rim protector?

Interesting that they cost about the same as RE-11s. Looking forward to the review. I'm sure it will be strongly positive.

Yeah, best rim protector is to not hit a rim...
RE11s are way cheaper, I dont think these are for maximum performance. They have a treadwear between 200-300? |

2. RE-11 are marginally cheaper (not "way" cheaper) and with a treadwear rating of 300 on the PSS, it will more than offset the miniscule cost difference. 3. The PSS's have a treadwear warranty and the RE-11's none. 4. The PSS's test performace surpasses the RE-11 (and every other tire) in most or all areas. 5. No doubt the RE-11 is a great tire -- I have used them on other vehicles. But, they don't last very long and as they wear they get a bit squirrely in wet conditions. 6. I researched this purchase for a couple of months and absolutely believe these are the best tires to get for a Z that is driven almost every day (and driven hard, conditions permitting), in many different situations and in different weather conditions. Time will tell if I am right. |
Was close to buying these tires, but decided to get Continental DW's instead. Not that they compare at all, it's just that I have a dedicated set of wheels/tires for the track, so these are going to be solely for normal driving, about 90% of which is on the highway. I didn't think I needed super performant tires in that respect.
Really interested in hearing how they perform and last. How does that mileage warranty work? I'm sure I would get much less than 15k miles on them on the track, :rofl2:. |
woot i am ordering these when i get home. Still snow on the ground though.

You are right that the PSS will outlast the RE11, but it doesn't grip better. The PSS was designed as a replacement to the PS2, which is nothing more than a very good street tire where the RE11 was designed as a treaded track tire. You might want to lower your expectations on the PSS to something like a S04. It's a Michelin tire, I believe they will be very good. I just hate the fact that they are so expensive, almost like buying a BMW.
Life expectancy on RE-11 is roughly 8K-15K, PSS is 30K. Quote:

Realize that treadwear ratings are proprietary values that are not accurately comparable across tire brands. It's a voodoo number the tire companies make up to meet criteria (like DOT certification) and to compare wear ratings within their brand lineup.
If you think the Super Sports are going to last appreciably longer than RE-11s or even the older PS2, you're going to be disappointed. That treadwear rating of 300 means zilch. That being said, I'm sure they will be phenomenal tires. Certainly on my list in the future if the RE-11s don't keep me as thrilled as they currently do. |

I just read the Michelin tire warranty fine print. The 30k coverage only applies to 2011 model year vehicles equipped with the tires as OEM fitment. If the car comes with staggered sizes, the warranty is then cut in half to 15k miles. From the brochure, it looks like buying loose tires for our cars doesn't keep the 30k mile warranty. Boooo (see file attached)
Treadwear (tire softness) and grip go hand in hand. You can't have a rock hard tire that outgrips every other existing tire. Look at F1. They run on soft compounds to ring out the 'hot' laps when they need to and switch to harder compounds for longevity between pit stops at the cost of losing a few seconds a lap. Quote:

ahahahahaha I only pay 66.66% of cost for my michelin tires. And i beg you to show me where the PS2 is only a OK street tire? Really I would like to see that.

The Fit is pretty nasty on a tight course... my little brother had one, that thing was a blast to take in the twisties. |

Onzedge- any inital reviews and picts on the car? :D |
call me naive, but are you really trying to compare a run in some backroad to running around a track? i think you need to drop your fast and furious dvd and try a session at the track.

http://www.the370z.com/members/onzed...sport-rear.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/onzed...port-front.jpg I just mounted them this morning so forgive their lack of tire dressing appearance. My initial impressions, after some testing in the parking lot of an abandoned business, are: 1. Significant steering feel/feedback improvement -- very crisp and much more precise 2. Quieter than stock Potenzas (maybe my imagination) 3. Very difficult to break traction (VDC off) 4. Handling is excellent I wish I were more articulate today, but my clients ran me to mental exhaustion this week. More later. |
Those look nice and beefy.
