There are other options besides buying new Volks at 3500-4000 a set.. Used wheels can be had for a much better price.. or **** even look at Enkei wheels.. They aren't in the same category as Rays wheels (forged) but they are a quality wheel that is original and not a blatant knock offs.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure Volks TE37 was the FIRST RIM OF IT'S KIND EVEEEERRRR.

And trust me, I understand the work that these companies go through to design and manufacture their wheels. However, I can say without a doubt they are charging a premium for them just because they are popular and desirable wheels. You're buying the name with a wheel thrown in :)

Enter companies like Rota....They see that there is obviously a market for replica wheels at a significant discount in pricing. It's obvious people will pay less for the look and can ignore the weight or process used to create them.

While Enkeis are a great option, it's hard to get that perfect "hella flush" look that all the kids are crazy about.

in a country where chinese, koreans, japanese, taiwanese, malaysian, etc are considered the same you are a 'smart shopper' if you buy rota/xxr/shitwheelznext which looks exactly the same, smells and feels the same as the Volks (to their eyes).

it's a very sad situation really. this is why i get tired when i see replica cheezo wheels. why bother putting in the effort when people dont realize the difference?

I'm not here to start any sort of forum argument. I'm just saying, for a daily driven car these cheaper wheels are not bad and give you the look you want for a decent price point. I'd say for what the MAJORITY of people on this site use their cars for these knockoff wheels will work just fine.

My (personal!) main problem with buying $3k+ wheels is this:

They are just as easy to steal as a cheap wheel no one cares about. Wheel locks, alarm, etc...it doesn't matter. A thief will steal volks long LONG LONG before he even considers a brand such as Rota.

When I had rotas on my old WRX, no one tried anything. I had zero worries about someone grabbing them. My roomate has BBS LM's on his S2000 and is terrified to leave it somewhere unmonitored for a while. Same with my other roomate when he bought Advan RG-IIs for his S2000.

Said S2000 on RG-II's was stolen from my driveway a week later and he was out the cost of those shiny new pricey wheels. It happens, I know, but it happens a lot more in South Florida I guess.

In the end it boils down to what a person likes, wants and can afford. I would never look down on anyone for getting knockoff wheels, nor would I call a person rolling around on Volks an idiot for spending so much. If the end result looks good, who gives a ****?

I see your point but I think you're looking at it wrong, look up the top 10 cars most likely to get stolen... they are old hondas and toyotas etc. The average, every day, beater, cheap car is more likely than the exclusive unique car. Same with wheels, stealing high value wheels only causes more attention to the thief, harder to sell and not get caught. That goes for all aftermarket wheels, cheap too. OEM wheels are the ones that get stolen more than any Volk, Rota, XXR wheels out there. Really shouldn't be scared of getting them stolen, should never be an issue when purchasing/choosing wheels.

I kind of agree with you in looking down/looking up to people because of wheels. It's not a custom built turbo, all you did is write a check, or clicked buy... no accomplishment there. On the other hand, if you have sports package Rays, you cant go and buy cheap cast wheels... that's pointless, even if form > function rule applies, our OEM wheels look more than great, and are forged light high quality as well. Can't expect to not get a few WTFs? out of it in a thread on these forums.

yah i dont see the point of selling the sport package wheels for cheezo wheels at all.

100% of the time uninformed folks buy the wrong offset and widths, wrong tire size making their cool car look like crap.

yah, base 18's i think it is worth upgrading to the sport package 19's or another set of 19's. but if you're planning on getting some XXR's or some garbage, stick with your 18's and run some spacers.

I have no problem with owners buying replica wheels for a much cheaper price. I just can't justify spending 2-5k on a set of rims. I say buy the xxr if you like it, the only people that hate on them are just trying to justify their purchase.

Keep in mind when you need to replace 1, 2, or 3 wheels. Ouch!

Yeah, but replacing a cast wheel also stinks, I cant begin to tell you how many calls I get of people looking for discontinued cheap wheels like this. These manufacturers discontinue designs like I change underwear these days.

To me Volk and advan are great, but they have moved out of the price range that made them great. A TE37 is over 3k these days, and I would rather have a 3 piece wheel for that, WHY you ask? Well b/c if I ever damage that wheel, it wont cost me an arm and a leg to fix it, I can just order the damaged lip or barrel and put it on. They are many reputable cast wheel companies out their, but I wouldnt put XXR on my Z.

kenchan 12-28-2010 02:44 PM

If you can't tell the difference by all means get the cheap wheels.:ugh2:

Waiz 12-28-2010 02:59 PM

Disaster averted!!

If you can't afford quality NEW wheels just paint your stocks or look around for used sets.

To the op, I dont know if you are in the mainlaind (U.S.), I am out here in Hawaii and everything is marked up because of importing exporting tax, shipping , etc etc, But if you have patience you can find a sweet deal on the forum or locally, I found a set of 5 month old babied Volk GTF's for 27 without tires of course, and I offered the guy 2K cash he accepted, problem is he is always at work...dam dam...so just give it time and maybe you can score a good deal, good luck to you. :tiphat:
P.S. check craigs for wheels and research how to check the authencity of quality wheels before buying used.
