If you haven't had the pleasure of banging out and then inserting 20 studs you just don't know what you are missing.

I was thinking of doing the rears yesterday, but the people at Ichiba wouldn't let me pick up at will call, so now I'm having second thoughts.

Is it really that difficult? Looks like it might be a little easier with the stud removal tool.

Here a link to the detailed instructions: How To

alan93rsa 03-07-2009 10:20 PM

I'd rather use the tool made for removing the studs if possible. The amount of beating you have to do to get the studs out can't be good for the bearings and races. It's also a good idea to have a couple of open lug nuts to pull the new studs in with. I usually toast at lest 2 nuts putting in a set of 20 studs.

370ZRR 03-08-2009 03:02 AM

Semtex if you went with option of grinding wheels or have someone mill it out properly to keep it pretty even how much material or how deep to clear the nubs?

Any thoughts on where I can get that tool?? I've gone to a couple auto parts stores in my area, but no luck.

Yeah, that's it  A little pricey though, I was hoping it would be around $50-$60 bucks. Much better then using a hammer.

alan93rsa 03-09-2009 10:36 PM

The price isn't too bad if you add in the cost of damaging a hub or bearing beating a stud out. If two people went in on one the price would be half. Just need to find a local or be willing to ship it to the second person.

There are a few tools which circulate on the NSX board which are not ones you would would want to own. I used the ABS bleeder for my NSX. You put your name on the list and the members just keep forwarding the tool. Not a bad deal until someone gets the tool and runs into issues getting their job done.

^ I was kinda tossing the same idea around in my head. We could start a 'tool co-op'.

Anyone know of a So-Cal shop that would do the install on the spacers?
Someone that has the proper stud press tool and not a hammer.

I'll check w/ my buddy who has a shop (local to you) to see if he uses tools rather than brute force for this kinda job.

Cobra,

My buddy also gets rough w/ it; he uses a hammer and forces the studs out. He said he's performed 50+ stud jobs and has never encounted issues. He does have a tool (more like a machine) that he uses but the labor costs render it too costly; he takes off the whole break assembly. He doesn't use anything like the e-bay tool mentioned above.

Thanks

No, I'm installing some Eibach springs today, wanted to check clearance first, not sure if I'm going 15mm or 10mm in the front, will probably do those next week.

Thanks for posting those pics... I like the subtle (yet noticeable) difference. Is that your car, and if so, are those the H&R's you had mentioned?

I installed one on the front driver's side. I was even taking pictures every step of the way so that I could provide step-by-step instructions. Then when I went to mount the wheel back on, lo and behold, it wouldn't go in all the way. If you look at the second and third picture below, you will see that the way these are designed, the stock wheel studs stick out a bit. Now, this normally isn't a problem, because the nubs just go into the spaces/slots in between the holes on the back of the wheel (see fourth pic). Well guess what? Those slots in between the holes aren't cut low enough. The nubs from the stock wheel studs can't clear them! Take a close look at the last picture. To figure out what was going on, I laid the wheel down flat on the ground, then placed a spacer on top. The spacer's wheel studs are in through the holes of the wheel. The holes you see in the picture are where the nubs of the stock wheel studs would go through. You can see through the holes that they're about halfway blocked by the bottoms of the slots. Way to go, Nissan!

Semtex, I discovered today while installing the longer studs, that the rear wheel has larger cut-outs in the back. Your pics show the front wheel, and for some reason the fronts don't have as large of an opening as the rears. It looks like the the spacer you had with the studs installed would work for the rears, just curious if you tried them on the rear ???

I was not aware of that. No, I didn't try the rears. The first wheel I tried was the front driver's side, and as soon as I ran into the issue with the cutouts, I packed everything back up. Thing is -- I wouldn't want to space out the rears without also spacing out the fronts. I'd want to keep the same proportions between front and back, if you know what I mean. I might actually re-order those spacers and just have my mechanic grind out the cutouts of the fronts as he had originally suggested. I mean, I've done so much other stuff to my car by now that it just doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore. Thx for letting me know about the rear cutouts!

Yeah, I thought maybe they forgot to cut-out yours, when I saw my rears. So I pulled the front off and sure enough, those were different. wonder why Nissan did that? I was waiting till I put the Eibach springs on, before I ordered the fronts wasn't sure if I was going with 15mm or 10mm. Now the the car is lowered it looks like it will clear the 15mm no problem. I'll probably order the 15mm's later today, I"m going with the press in stud route, just for the weight savings and security of less bolts.

Minicobra1 04-13-2009 10:44 AM

Eibach springs installed, with 15mm spacers.
Review and pics as promised here: http://www.the370z.com/brakes-suspen...html#post55996
