Default Mixed tyre brand type question

Current setup:
245/40R19 (F) Pilot Super Sport
275/35R19 (R) Pilot Super Sport

I bought new Pilot Super Sports last year for my Z which only recently got boosted. It turns out I am going to need something alot more grippy on the rears because I am easily spinning out of control with these tyres.

So I have decided I will get a set of new tyres, perhaps some semi slicks like either of:
PROXES R888R or
POTENZA RE71R

But instead of blowing money on a whole new set of tyres, is it permissible to change out only the rear tyres from the Pilot Super Sports to either of those 2 semi-slicks mentioned above and keep the front as it is already, or is it a must to change out all 4 tyres?

Looking to go wider on the rears if possible aswell.

No problem, can just change the Rear,can go up to 285/35-19...

I wouldn't run two different types of tires like that. I get that you're trying to increase traction, but think about it. Now you've got much stickier rubber in the back than in the front. When you're driving fast and want to turn, now the front has much less grip than the rear. Either you end up with an understeering mess, or you fire yourself off the road because the rear hooks up and the front just slides. Replace all four for best results. Although, I still am absolutely 100% convinced that there is nothing wrong with your car or your tires.

Can you? Yes. You won't damage your car, but it won't lock your tires to the road.

If it were me I wouldn't. Learn to drive your newly boosted car with the tires you have, you'll be a better driver for it. I could spin the rear tires out without boost and I have 305 RE71Rs if I want, it doesn't mean the tires suck, it means I'm not driving right performance wise. Also if you put R888R on the rear and keep PSS on the front and drive through a wet/damp spot you stand a good chance of the car spinning out.

I'd run the PSS out to the end and then think about upgrading. PSS are fine tires.

I am convinced there must be something wrong with my setup. Because I still don't believe my car is suppose to rocket it self sideways in an instant when you are going straight under hard throttle.

I think it maybe, tyres, rear camber, or worn shocks. Gona have it all checked out soon.

Well, if you are convinced that the issue is with the car, then tires aren't the issue, and having wider and stickier tires won't fix it. Your car is still going to break loose and go side way, only that the car's grip will be even more bipolar (tire temp increasingly important due to compound).

Have you gotten together with BGTV8 yet? Or anybody in your local car club that's experienced with high powered cars?

Many that have commented (here and the VDC Off thread) have some combinations of good/great understanding in handling dynamics, long seat time in a boosted Z, strong mechanical background. If you don't believe in their assessments, then you should seek some in-person diagnosis of your car.

I was only deciding on the tyres is because I probably should go upto a semi-slick anyway for the increase in dry grip. Its gotta be better than the PSS even if there is some other issue with the car and not the tires.


Haven't got with GBVT8 yet. Hopefully i can when he gets down here.

And I am actually ringing around a few shops in SA to see who could have some seat time and work out if there is any suspension problems with my car.

Another things I noticed just now, is when I am turning corners, at traffic lights into new streets etc, I can hear a squaling sound like the tires are squealing. But I have only very light part throttle on, so how could my tires be squealing like that? Unless it's something else, like could it be the quaife diff?

Anyone experienced this squealing sound even just with very light throttle when turning?

Also, something to keep in mind is that semi slick type tires are far less forgiving that a street tire. A street tire will give you a lot of feedback that it’s near the limit of its grip. A semi slick will just grip all the way up to the limit and then break loose with little warning.
