While my side projects are free (see iPhoneBrowser for example), I will some day publish some of my iPhone apps in the store.
I think if you have the right programming and user interaction abilities, an iOS app is the best way to make money on the side writing applications. OTOH, a consulting job is probably the best way to make money.
