Default Toying with the idea of making a drag strip

Mainly because there is not a 1/4 mile strip close to me. I know that it would take several years of planning. But I would like imput from people that are at tracks alot and maybe people that have worked at one.

I would like to find an old air stripe and just refinish the surface. But what type of surface is the best? I know the best drag strips that time to build up rubber on. But I'm sure that it is not just asphalt or is it?

I don't even know if it would be a public race track or more of a privite track, for maybe some small events and car shows. Kind of invite only things so insurance should not be an issue.

Has anyone tried this or do you know of someone that has?

I have heard that if you have a 1/4 mile track you should double the distance of the track as stopped room. So the whole track would be 3/4 of a mile long. Does that sound about right?

I have not looked in to trees and time systems yet. So i will have to figure out what all is involved with that.

i hope you have some big dollars as your tax payment will be more than how much your car cost, good luck.

i do it cheaply, i just go check my boxer after taco bell or get a pair of thongs to speed up the process

I can tell you from experience of a local here who tried to build his own track, unless you have $25mil~ to start with... not including final costs, over/under-estimates, Operating costs, insurance, etc... Don't even start.

I have never heard of privite drag strip although it sounds awesome... What heard, not seen, is a skid pad. sounds a lot simpler and cheaper to me

My boss' brother-in-law just built a sanctioned kart track here in Texas.. I'll see if he has any insight to licensing/costs/etc.

First thing I would do is find a suitable piece of land: 3/4 mile long X 300-500 yds..

Then ask the city if there are any noise violation constraints.

Also, check with insurance on liability for facility as well as for the employees you'd hire...

Thanks, but yeah the peice of land would be the big thing. I would want it out by itself. See we dont have a 1/4 mile track around. We have 2 1/8 mile tracks but they kind of keep the imports out of there. I'm close friends with the commisioners son. His dad always messes with me about me car and claiming I must be alittle street racer. But me and him talked and he explained we have a big street racing problem in the area. I think he said something like last month over 20 people were killed and caused over $100,000 in damages, cars hitting gaurd rails, light poles knocking out some power lines, and one car went through a store front. I joked talking about how i wished i had a track, while i really have always wanted to build one. But he told me he could get the city to donate a large part of the money. But then if I that happens it would have to be opened to the public and i would have to hire people to run it vs it being privite.

But really it has just been something I have always wanted. I would nit even care if I had to go old school arm drops in the beginning

I know of a abandoned one in the next town over. I figure if air planes can land there then there should not be a noise issue.

Come to Long Island New York and open a track here. We have an old abandoned Air Force base out east that has two long runways just sitting around. The land is slowly being purcahsed and turned into various companies but the runways are still there. We have a few groups that are pushing for a track since we have NONE at all on the island but it keeps getting turned down.

Well see about a year ago a guy here opened up a gaming store. Not to sell games but for people to play them. He had 3 privite rooms with 100 inch projector screens with xboxs and ps3s in each room, six tvs with xboxs, and 30 high gaming computers. There was also a snadwhich/ice cream shop in the front. I helped him run it till he moved to Miami. I miss it cause everyone hungout there. So i have thought about starting it back up to. I think it would go great as a store front for the drag strip. I would like to have the store, the drag strip, and 2 large skid pads. So 8 could use one for car shows and parking and the other for people to play around in. But if I did all this I would have to quit my career and working for the government at the age of 22 is a pretty nice cushie job. That will be hard to give up.

My old professor Steve Kenny was pretty much the head guy who got the west Hampton track shutdown for "noise pollution" amongst other reasons.

I liked him until he told me that. He was ao against it and I tried to explain to him why it's good and he had 100 reasons why it is a negative and in a the town of south hampton propery owners get what they want.

They were fighting back and forth and than two agreed upon
A hefty payment plus kickback On the property's future revenue. Pretty much made it a no brainer for the guy to give it up. He originally only had the track open On weekend days than as they kept it open longer more and more people
Complained. He said he would be surprised for any town to let a track
Be built from here on out. It's a tough one to sell to a board.

I would guessnamate if you find the land nice and cheap and don't set up any grandstands or anything. Gavel parking lot ect you could probably get it done for a couple million.
