Not all pre 2011 mustangs were bad. 2003 Terminators (Cobra) will destroy most cars in 1/4, and they had an independant rear suspension too (The only mustangs that did I think). A factory iron block with forged internals helps a bit too.

In any case, Mustangs will pwn just about any japanese car in drag racing, and while it would be nice for the Z to be a bit more competitive, it's just not a great platform for this purpose. For the mustang haters in this thread, remember one thing:

Ask any racer, any real racer. It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile; winning's winning.

With the huge HP advantage, it wouldnt surprise me if the new 5.0 Mustang can still lap faster than a Z at a road course. Now that would be fitness versus raw power.

At the end of the day, do people really give a $hit?

370Z is a true sports car, like a Porsche. The Mustang is a pony car, like the Camaro. The GTR is a supercar, like the 911 Turbo.

Besides all being performance cars these are really drastically different cars.

the only way a Z could beat the Mustang is if it had a Spoon engine and a MoTec system exhaust.

Re all pre 2011 Mustangs being rubbish. I traded my 2001 Mustang GT for the 370Z. It was far from being rubbish. Never a thing wrong with it. Sure it had shortcomings, but quality was not one of them. Ran great, sounded great with its stock exhaust, and got over 27MPG on the highway at over 70MPH. Love the Z, but would trade paint jobs in a second with the Mustang.
