Another unsolicited review from latest R&T review of 370Z vs. '08 Caymen noted the following. "An observation we made over the week was the VQ's sensitivity to temperature. Engines prefer cool weather, but the VQ absolutely detests hot days. During the track day, we had to pit after about four laps in each session, the VQ winded by high oil temps and limited by its engine management to 6500 rpm."
This is not a good omen... |
Yup...
Travis, could you share with me what you are doing as far as the cooler is concerned? I want to do my own too, but I'm not sure what size core to buy. |
I'm having it done by my local shop (not sponsor)... they are building it under their in-house parts division and plan to sell it to the masses after I test next weekend... they've put a lot of time into spec'ing it out, so hopefully it will have the right amount of capacity and be kit'd for clean install... i will post lots of pictures next week when done... will ask them to sponsor here as well...
I talked to another reputable parts mfgr that intends to build a kit also... this thread has gotten some attention! |

The edmunds.com article on the 370z mentions an oil cooler and diff cooler available from Nismo. This picture is from the Edmunds website too. It seems most of the test cars given to the press came fitted with these coolers. But these parts don't seem to be on sale from Nismo yet. Nissan better hurry and bring them to the market soon!!!

I got Race brake fluid put in today, somehow the brakes feel like they are more easily modulated. Might have something to do with the consistency or viscosity. There is more usable pedal and that helped the R to F weight shift when slowing down from high speeds.
|
hey i think i met the guy who wrote that article about the Z @ R&T or C&D... forgot, i was drunk that night... he's on my facebook, do you guys care if i ping him to get u what he really thinks? or what happened exactly?
|
I think you just wanted to tell us you know him ;) no we dont mind.
|
lol he's not the stig bro! he's just ur normal asian dude that likes cars
|
i'd be interested... maybe he could tell us which would have won in different customer categories: for the normal asian dudes, for the track addicts, for the drifters, for the posers, for the yuppies, etc... also, what does he think about its potential for tuning...
had my formula ford event today at bondurant ! boy, i'm tired... no abs, no nada... i was fast! :) but late in the day definitely making rookie mistakes - waaay late braking, grinding into second at end of straight... i look forward to getting back to syncro gears and srm next weekend ! |
amazing ^ did you get any pics/vid?

here they are !
picture... Attachment 950 ... and here's the video... my wife has never used the video feature on her new canon, so unfortunately we didn't get any hot laps |
Very Cool ^
Well I'm home, Z survived its first trackday (with 750 miles on the odo)...got something like 20 track miles. |
^cool... so...... how did it go ? any overheating issues ? please share your thoughts on what you liked and didn't and how that changes your upgrade priorities
|
I've only been on the second page.
1 i'd change oils to a nice 5w30 with a 0w 40 mixed in(sythetic/ Mobil/RP/RL/Valvoline super syn 2. id go with SS lines and Hawk pads ( ceramics) 3. stock.rotors are good...but a nice set of inexpensive but good slotted rotors are always betterat heat disapation. ***4. If your tracking the car....i'd remove the coolant and add 80% distilled water and 20% water Wetter or its equivalent. a remote fan switch might be helpful here as well. the BS RE050......but i'm not clear if your running the sport package. I'd think Nitto 555's would do an excellent job. My RE50's on my GTO wouldn't hook for shnitz....though drag radials isn't the answer here.... people don't seem to know coolant/antifreeze is for cold weather and anti corrosion.....you need only 2 bottle of water wetter for it anticorrisive properties . Water , by nature removes more heat per gram than any coolant. In Street "encounters" since they never last long.....none of these issues pop up. but i'm betting a good sythetic oil and better coolant mixtures could stave off your oil heatup issue. + a fulyy broke in motor. did you use the rev match..or turn it off....and how was it at constant redlines. You broke it in right.. the oil temp thing is somehting i think type and the engine being green has something to do with. jm race opinion. |
when i track my american Z...i use exactly what i use on the street. no tire changes, nothing....
i think your car should be abe to turn your track times, as is. Not augmented. In drag racing i only change the tire pressures... sometimes just let some out of the rears and run.. OP thanks for all the good info. |
regress;
I did a small local track ..... recently paved about 1.5 mile. this new engine does have some design flaw ..i've never seen tekps rise that fast. No 1 priority external oil cooler. in a high flow area... and maybe a resizing of the pan bigger with more capacity and cooling ability. arrrh. |
All it needs is an oil cooler IMO. Having an oil cooler is good anyway...

2004 Mazda RX-8 - Flexalite Engine Oil Cooler
How about something like this? If it can cool a rotary...it should be able to do wonders for a VQ. FLEXALITE ENGINE OIL COOLER KIT -- 5 in. height, 20 in. width, 3/4 in. depth; Comes with Flexalite's proprietary sandwich adapters; Complete with all hardware and easy-to-follow instructions in English, French and Spanish; Designed for moderate or auxiliary engine oil cooling applications on vehicles with spin-on filters; Supplied standard with 1/2 in. billet barbed fittings that offer more secure hose connections; With Flexalite's limited 1-year warranty. |
there will be kits made specifically for the 370... just give it a bit more time
|
there already are some good ones and STILLEN is working on one for the 370Z.
|
I forgot where I read it, but I remember reading from a review that buying NISMO aftermarket parts specifically the oil cooler, and the brake fluid cooler, is highly recommended. Gahh.. it bugs me where I read that.. But that's one thing they do highly recommend if your going to track the car.

Travis, how about brake cooling ducting. Im going to take a look at possibilities next week when I take my bumper off. Will let you all know what I find...
I would hate to see our little fang air splitters go to waste :) |

look fwd to hearing what you find... in my limited time on track with this car, haven't had fading probs yet, but might be a good idea... also i honestly haven't had the car in my own garage enough since i bought it to study what's there already... i'm guessing you looked and there is no existing direct path for airflow
btw, i'm toying with the idea of a mod to the 'fanged' area to make it look more like the lower grill on the cts-v pictured below... anyone seen any photochops of this ? input on whether it'd look good or lame ? would only do it if it helped with airflow too... just an idea at this stage |
we are going to need a new bumper for that I think. I wish the front end didnt end so abruptly..
|
RCZ
How about posting some good detailed photos of what is behind the bumper. I'd like to have a better idea of what I need to put together before I order the parts to fab a cooler. Thanks |

That would be very helpful.
Thanks |
I experienced the same exact problem with oil temps at the track today as well. I'm a member of a local track and I usually take a different car but I wanted to try out the Z.
I had driven to philly one time before this and got stuck in traffic, noticed extreme oil temps. It's alarming especially when the ambient temperature is under 60 degrees and under normal driving conditions. Nissan Should make this right. In all of the sports cars I have owned an own I have NEVER had a problem with extreme oil temps. I think it's inexcusable though that Nissan let the car go out with this sort of problem, for a 2 mile road course I could barely get 6 laps in before I ran into power reductions and oil temps pushing up to 300!!! I called the dealer to complain about it. Don't know how much everyone follows other cars but this happened with the BMW 335 when it came out and they did put oil coolers on the customers cars. Also I can't hear the engine over the wind noise and frequently had to look at the tach to know where I was. Obviously will be putting on an exhaust and a real cold air intake, bc the engine compartment is way too hot. The positive is the car handles pretty damn well for the money, just needs a few mods but I think owners need to bring it to the dealers and nissans attention about rising oil temps under NORMAL conditions! Just my thoughts sorry for any grammar errors or my rant. Also disappointed bc my in car camera's angle sucked so no good footage for you guys :( but I just got the new motorsports one I'll mount for next time, and I promise some cool clips..... |
The STILLEN Oil Cooler Kit is finished, waiting for the brackets to come back from plating. It will launch next week, and features a SETRAB cooler, full bolt-on kit.
I'll get details and pricing out as soon as I can next week. This should take care of these problems.. |

It would be nice to have a sticky in this section for oil coolers. At least 3 vendors have announced kits. For those that track or intend to track their cars this is important information.
|
Hey Sorry Alan, but I didn't get a chance to get those tape measure pictures for you....sorry bud.
|
Not a problem. The photos are very helpful.
Thanks |
For what its worth, I just track tested the Mishimoto Oil Cooler kit and it worked well! Oil temps never went past 260 and I was ringing the car out as hard as I could. :)
|
Mike, that's great news, thanks for updating ! Please share more details on how much time on track per session, how many sessions, etc... thanks again
|

In the second 20 minute session I pushed the car as hard as I could for as long as I could specifically to test the oil cooler. It got to 260 degrees about half way through then didn't budge for the other half. Then also, on the cool down laps it would get back down to about 220-230 fairly quickly. |
Has anyone installed and tested the Central 20 oil cooler?
