Default Anyone with OS Giken LSD?

Does anyone have an OS Giken LSD in their car? I'm highly considering one but dont have enough info on it. Some people say you need shims, some say stubs, if you have a VLSD (sport model). Also I wanted to find out if the factory configures the plates for you per your order or you have to do it yourself once you get the LSD. And as far as tuning of the cone springs, does it come with different ones and you chose which to go with our it comes with a "standard" one and you just buy something different from them as needed.

If you have one, please give a quick review and some info. Thanks!

Doesnt seem like the people who sell them know too much about them.....

Actually I think he is keeping it now, and will report back soon with his results/details.
He did mention that if you are looking for one to PM him as he knows of another good deal I believe.

Z1, so do you know what it takes to make this work? it looks like you need at least a shaft. which side and where do you get one. how about shims? some say yes, others say no.

and how about tuning the diff (plate configuration/ cone spring options) - specified with your order and they'll come from the factory that way or you have to do everything yourself?

i tried calling os giken a few times, but no answer.

do you sell these diffs?

thanks.

The diffs can be specified with your choice of lockup and intial torque, though most go for the default setting by OSG. It's really only suggested to deviate from that if you have substantial track time, notes, and datalogs to back up what changes you're looking to make.

For the sidelash shims, in some rare instances a different size shim may be required from what is provided from the factory. This is not something you can predict at the outset, you're installer will only know it when he goes to install everything. Shims are offered in a range of sizes and available from the dealership directly. In 99% of the cases I've been involved with (more of these than probably anyone else in North America for the Z/G platform) no other shims were needed as the factory ones were able to be reused.

Was convinced by my girl to just keep the OS Giken and not worry about the money and get it installed because she knew I wanted it real bad. LOVE IT. Like Z1 stated with the open diff, Night and Day difference and I'm completely in love with it and SUPER stoked that I got the OS Giken. Worth the money and I don't get any of that clicking or grabbing that the one guy was saying with his, obviously bad, Nismo diff. Anyone thinking of getting this should, there really isn't any intrusiveness but definitely a noticeable difference in traction and where the power is being put. LOVE IT, thanks Z1.

I did purchase some bearing/seal package from Z1 and recommend that and so does Z1 just for piece of mind. Anyone thinking of changing the ring/pinion gear I recommend that too and Z1 recommends doing that at the same time.

ok, so it looks like i'll need at least a replacement shaft. is this a dealer item or do you have those, z1? and how much? what about the price for the bearing/ seal package?

i assume the "default setting" would be 1.5 way/ full lock plate config./ and highest initial break away torque for the cone springs, correct? i'm looking for less than full lock... maybe around 80%, which would be 1 set of plates in the "de-activated" configuration? the full lock would be great for drift/ drag, but not ideal for grip as it would induce understeer on throttle.

B1nks, did you do the install yourself? how was it? i did the lsd install on my miata with the help of a friend, but it was not easy. i'm thinking of having a shop do it on the z, unless someone can tell me it's not too bad.

F**********ck no I didn't do that myself ! Haha I can do some basic stuff but this is a no go on the self do list. The full lock will not be for drifting because it's 1.5 way and does not full lock up on corner entry. If you feel you get too much understeer then counter with sway bars and alignment ! I haven't noticed any understeer added and if there is it's VERY minor but it's so minor that adjusting it with sways or simply powering out would appear to be a simple adjustment.

Also Z1 should have those half shafts you're going to need, if they don't some vendor on here should.

what bearing/seal package you got from them? are they just stock? or some special ball bearing /high temp bearings?

This mite be my problem. coz i don't remember my installer charging me for anything extra other then the long shaft.

To my knowledge it's just stock bearings but they are fresh because the stock bearings have already been pressed into the pumpkin and have to be unpressed and then pressed in again after the LSD install and it's just hard on them so they recommend getting new ones that only have to be pressed once. More of a piece of mind and easier on the parts. What problem you having ?

Keep in mind this is my first experience with a mechanical LSD.

When the LSD was first installed, Grabbing and knocking in tight turns. diff whining after 15 mint on the highway doing 60 mph (in the same condition stock VLSD was also whining but with a lower pitch).

After a track day (two weeks ago) everything quit down. No grabbing or knocking on tight turns!. Didn't test the car on the highway yet to hear if the whining disappear or not.

What you said about changing the bearings makes a lot of since, they should of changed them when first installed.

Make sure to keep up with your oil changes. Otherwise, enjoy the new car...it makes that much of a difference!

We are testing the Carbonetic Metal LSD right now on the track 370Z and will report back after this weekend. So far in the parking lot, it's not very grabby at all! Surprising!
