Default 370Z from STR to STU... again.

Hey guys - I know there's a good bunch of you that autocross the 370Z, and know how ridiculous the car seems in STR both with the 255 tire size limit and competition against much lighter, more nimble S2000's and Miatas. It has been brought up yet again that the 370Z may be moved to STU. I urge you guys to please send a quick letter in expressing your thoughts to the SCCA Solo board on this matter. I think the 370Z would be a good fit in STU with its 285 tire size limit against the 350Z, C5 Corvette, M3, and a host of AWD cars. Here is the link for contacting the SCCA solo board:

https://www.crbscca.com/

For someone who has suffered through A-street prepared without Hoosiers, but would like to finally compete nationally, and competitively in autocross with the 370Z I think this is a worthwhile opportunity for us. Get on it!!

Posted about this already in the main autox thread but here's the letter I submitted in support of the move:

Quote:
1) The 370z is in line with the overall philosophy of the class.

2) The reason 370z's are not currently showing up in the ST category is that the car is currently severely hobbled with the narrower than even stock wheel and tire restrictions. The car needs STU wheel and tire widths to be any fun.

3) Numerous 370z owners left when the car was moved from CS to BS in the street category. Many of these owners could be lured back if the 370z was moved to STU.

4) With the upcoming change to "open" ECU's it can be anticipated that the boost buggies will get faster and ruin the current parity in the class. By moving the 370z into STU this parity can be restored.

5) With regards to "screwing" those that have recently built an STU 350z, precedant has previously been set that adding a newer generation of a car model to the same class as its previous generation is ok. A recent example of this is placing the ND Miata in STR which immediately obsoleted the NC Miata.

6) As I've seen false information regarding the possible power the 370z makes with ST legal mods I would refer the STAC to the numerous data points that are available online showing that the whp with legal ST mods is approximately 330-335 whp.

7) and finally, Bryan Heitkotter doesn't see the 370z upsetting the competitive balance of the class and believes the 370z should be moved into STU.
Feel free to use any or all of it.

Gave up on SCCA a long time ago. Good luck.

From my 2013 letter:
  • The factory wheel and tire sizes exceed the parameters of STR: in contradiction with philosophy of the street touring class which should not require an immediately negative change.
  • The 370Z shares the same platform with the G37 including engine and suspension. The 370Z is a market competitor to the Genesis, Mustang, and Camero all classed in STU.
  • In the 2013 August Fastrack, the stated reasoning behind adding a slew of RWD cars to STU stated: "One thing they all have in common is the ability, and need, to fit more tire than allowed in the lower classes," and this is exactly the case with the 370Z.
  • Additionally, the 370Z Nismo should be treated as an option package, not a different model. Unlike the 350Z Nismo (which includes chassis stiffening), the 370Z Nismo package does not present any competitive advantage with Street Touring allowable modifications. Any suspension, exhaust, or aerodynamic gain can be improved upon by a non-Nismo 370Z with a lower starting weight (similar to a preference for non-STI WRX where both are allowed in STU). No other model of car is excluded from a Street Touring class where the engine and chassis are the same.

Some great additional points in there tak. Thank you. I don't have much hope... but now that I'm finally purchasing Hoosier A7's for my street prepared 370Z I'm dead sure they'll make the move to STU. LOL

Not yet, but based on a few things not counting that out for next year!! Oh I can't wait for some purple crack. I have 315/30r19 rears (squeezing them on OEM rear rays for now, 19x10) and getting another set of rear rays and 295/30r19 fronts. Not quite sure if I can fit a 315/30r19 on the front... you run 315/30r18 front A7's right?

Yep, 315/30-18 in the front.

Yeah, probably not a bad idea for this topic to have it's own thread. I am drafting up my letter now.

My guess is a few months. IIRC, even if approved, it wouldn't be effective until the 2019 season

That's fine with me... lol I would love for it to change, but I finally bought myself a set of A7's damnit. I've been joking around that now that I actually have a car prepped for ASP (most importantly, the tires) they'll move it now.

It should be out in the next 2 months. If it's approved, it would most likely be in 2018.

Looking forward to it. I still have goals in my local b-street scene but I think I'll be ready to build the car in another season or 2.
