Why not wash the car and tape it up? I have used carpet defender which you can buy at the local home remodel stores. It comes is a 18'' or so wide x25' or many50' roll for ~$9. You wash to get rid of possible dirt rubbing and marring the car. The clear defender will protect the car and peel off easy enough. It's decently thick stuff so it will reduce rock chips too.
