Which rear dif ?
Hello ! So I am in search for a new rear dif ! My car is a 2012 sport manual ! I just ordered a Fast intentions twin turbo setup and it will be here in a month and a half or so . I road race the car but also drive it on the street . I have a DD so it only has like 9k miles on it . So which rear dif should I go with that would work best for me ? Thanks Ken (PS If anyone needs a hitch contact me at 370z Hitch.com - Trailer Hitch, Towing, Trailer Hitches For Cars )

If its in the budget, go with the Giken.

Quaife is a good choice for a street car.
|
If it's primarily track with a little street go with a clutch type diff (OSG or Cusco). If it's mostly street with a little track get the Quaife.
If you decide to go with the Quaife let me know. I'll have a used one for sale in a couple weeks. |
I am running the OSG and love it.
|
I went with Wavetrac because it performs like a clutch type diff as it locks where Quaife does not. The cost is comparable to Quaife and the maintenance is the same as oem.

I have an OSG 1.5-way going in as part of my new build.

Where did u get the wavetrac? I'm looking at getting a diff in a few weeks and it's between quaife and wavetrac for me. |
I got mine from Vivid Racing...

Did you order any seals or new side bearings with it?

I got all the extras from different vendors. Z1 has a kit that includes a Nismo or Z1 rear differential cover. I ordered my the other flang from ConceptZ.

Waiting on my OS Giken to arrive :) Not sure if it's going to be a 1.5 or a 2 way.:icon14:

Picking up my Z tonight from the shop with my new Cusco RS 1.5 installed. Too bad the roads are wet so any real break in of the diff will have to wait. |

I am going Wavetrac. Seems like the best all around technology. This is a great page that explains why it excels vs others. Obviously it is written by Wavetrac so keep that in mind. Wavetrac Technical Info |

I'm still deciding between the Wavetrac and the Cusco RS 1.5. :icon14:

I have the cusco 1.5 RS and it's savage on the street. low speed turns sound like the titanic sinking (I like a noisy car). When arriving to car meets, be prepared for the "one of your coils is blown" comments.
The diff completely changed the feel of the Z. My next track event is this saturday, so I can report back with my impressions, if you'd like. |
Yeah, Hojin stated that was the main reason he switched from a clutch type diff to the Wavetrac and he said the clutch type is slightly better under hard driving conditions but given that he drives the Z more than just to hot rod or go to the track he thinks it's better overall and way less maintenance to worry about.

What about the tomei?

First autox with the new diff is Sunday. You're definitely right about it being harsh on the street though.
Out of curiousity Crux, how many springs and what % lock did you go with on yours? |
OS Giken
/thread |
OS Giken discontinued products for AT. Wavetrac was my first choice, but they don't support AT either.
100% was recommended to me and what I am currently running. I don't remember how many springs were used. Depending how the event goes this weekend, I may opt to have it backed down a bit during the next service interval. |
My first track event with the new differential was this past weekend at Summit Point. At first, I thought the differential was going to be too much. I thought I was going to be sideways for most of the course. I couldn't be more wrong.
The differential was predictable and I felt a level of control over the car I didn't think was possible. Instant power delivery, facilitated throttle steering, consistent power delivery over the hairiest of bumps/uneven asphalt, and it felt like it kept me going straight in threshold braking (occasionally it felt like the rear wanted to step out, but the slightest of counter-steering settled everything instantly). The cusco 1.5 way RS is a good choice if you're looking for a differential for track use YMMV, but my setup includes: bridgestone RE-11's 265f and 305r, powertrix coils, solid engine mounts/urethane transmission mounts/ SPL solid diff bushings, and some aero modifications. |
Lot of Ohio guys here, where did you guys get it installed? I've never done a diff before.

I have the poly transmission mount and z1 solid aluminum motor mounts and there is little to no vibration increase which bothers some, but you have a race car lol. You will notice an increase in noise because the suspension becomes more ridged. You will also notice an immediate increase in acceleration as there is no engine twist.

I noticed on the first cold startup was how ridiculous it sounded inside the cabin. There was a ton more vibration at idle. I'm editing this weekends footage now, but footage won't show you what it's like to drive with them.
|
I think the vibration is mitigated by the 4 point roll bar as it significantly stabilizes the car.

No, it is near silent and call/talk to them. They will get your sorted.
|
Thank you! You should have stopped by! We had a ton of down time.
I hope you and the car are okay. Long story short, I need to have the rear suspension raised and re-aligned, I just don't have time to get the car to a shop to take care of it. |
