Default Fuel Starvation Fixed!!!

I was getting fuel starvation on the track just above 3/4 of a tank which means toward the end of each session. I took the car to MER in Cresson Tx and they solved my problem. What I didn't know was the drivers side had a fuel level sensor and the opening matched the passenger side. They took a stock fuel pump assembly and installed it on the drivers side and did some wiring and plumbing, installed a relay, ect. I was able to take it on the track and run it down to 1/4 tank without ever having fuel starvation problems. The pump was $350 from Courtesy Nissan and it took MER about 3 hours to do the upgrade.

Can we get some more details please? What do you mean they did some plumbing? Did they add an additional fuel pickup or something or siphoning gas from one side of the tank to the other?

Your post is very vague and I'm sure plenty of us would like to know more.

I would love to give you more details but they did not give me any more info. They are going to do the same work to my wife's Z in a couple of weeks and I will try to get more details and post them when I know more.

Sounds like they may have installed the pump between the tanks and force-feed the left tank.

Pop the plastic, pop the cover, take a pic inside. We'll figure it all out.

IMO this will be quieter than CJM's system since this uses OEM pumps instead of CJM's which uses Walbro. However, since this doesn't have the surge tank like CJM's it probably won't do as well at very low fuel levels.

This is not new. The driver side of the tank has the same exact flange as the passenger side and you can put a stock fuel pump module over there.

The same was true for the 350z, and the same was true for the 300ZX.

In fact, in countless RWD sports cars of various manufacturers, this scenario exists.

But it is not a professional solution and it has many inherent flaws. The OP will get to experience them and share as his usage continues. It will work out OK for some light use and some scenarios, and its OK on a DIY level. But it is not a viable product-level solution, hence why none of the several Z performance shops have ever made a "kit" out of it.

I cant even count how many times this has been done by guys who needed a quick/cheap/temporary twin pump to support big power on the dyno.

If this is a project of interest to you guys, you dont even need to buy the $350 module from Nissan. Just go hang another fuel pump to the level sensor module that is already on the driver side.

Phunk, just for our education would you mind listing what the shortcomings of this setup would be?

pump service life will be unpredictable and short. The factory system uses a venturi instead of a small electric pump for this reason. The goal is to keep the one pump in the system wet and happy. To simply add another pump so that you dont have to depend on just the 1, neglects them both, and one or the other they will take turns running dry while you go about your merry way none-the-wiser.

The stock system will momentarily starve during a turn, and then begin to recover fuel. The proposed configuration it will starve, and then just keep on starving until the driver is kind enough to slosh the fuel back to the other side, thus letting the opposing pump run in a state of starvation instead.

So doing this will work in regards to drastically reducing pressure starvation to the rails/injection system (still not as well as the RRP due to available cubic inches for the fuel to slosh), but due to it heavily promoting individual pump starvation and abuse, its not an ideal system and cumulative wear to the pumps will eventually catch up.

The CJM RRP is able to preserve the factory fuel pump by sending all fuel pumped that the engine does not consume to the stock fuel pump to keep it wet. Its a strangely self defeating system in the sense that the RRP keeps the stock pump from starving much at all to begin with, while itself taking over the burden of providing the engines fuel pressure from within its own self contained fuel reserve that isnt subject to slosh since it is a small canister (surge canister).

I would recommend mounting that to the driver side fuel level hanger rather than that baffle. Those baffles are only secured by a couple tack welds, and members here have complained of them breaking and falling off without anything at all hanging to them.

and you really should run another set of wires for that secondary fuel pump. splicing them into the stock wires isnt a good idea, especially if you already have an upgraded fuel pump.
