Default Just wanted to thank Stillen.

Just wanted to thank Stillen employees for a very good hospitality and service. I came there with my son in my nismo Z looking for a dual intake. Special thanks to Mr. Doan for helping me find my product and the woman who said that my son is well behaved. He is in his terrible twos already but he has nis moments just let him get use to your store lol. I really liked the layout of the office and wish I could have seen more or do a tour but maybe next time. This will be my number one store for the Z. Next mods are an oil cooler, coilovers, HFC and lastly the supercharger.

Thanks Josh. I got a quick tech question if you can answer it.

I finally installed my air intake but when I turned on my car to start the engine my car all of a sudden sounded like it was struggling for gas and it smelled like it was running rich. Then all of a sudden it shuts off. It gave me an engine check light and me and a friend of mine who is a car mechanic for VolksWagon checked three times if there were any loose wiring or bolts and everything was tight, we checked the battery checked the MAF everything was intact by the instructions. So after three hours of reasembling and assembling the intake, it still did the same thing, So we gave up and put everything back to stock. The car ran fine when everything was put back together. I still had that check light on. So today I went to a nearest Nissan Dealership and told them I have a check engine light. Nissan serviced my car and asked me if I was playing around with the MAF. I told them I unplugged it and uninstalled it from stock to the stillen intake. I still dont know why that would give me a problem or why the intake wouldnt work with the car. I mean the instruction says to disconnect the battery then unplug the sensor and detach the MAF from the stock tube to the new tube. and plug it all back in. and connect the battery when all install is finished. At least we got a free car wash from Nissan. So what do you think we did wrong? I never had a problem installing an air intake in any car that I had in the past. Got any solutions Josh?

If anything I still have the aftermarket intake and saving it till I have all parts that I want for my Z and install them all in one shot. Thanks and hopefully Ill get a tour.

Sounds like you might have had a leak near the throttle body. Given that the MAF worked fine when you put it back to stock you didn't damage the MAF sensor. The Stillen pipes are just tubes, nothing that should cause the car to fail to run.

was thinking that I might have a leak around there but we triple checked and put the intake back on three times. Everything was seated flushed in and tightened to the point where i was thinkin man I might strip some bolts if I did. But who knows. I called the person who sold me the intake at stillen and he really couldnt give me any real help but asked if I wanted to take it in the stillen shop for them to install for around 200.00 bucks. I was actually considering to go there today but he said they were booked this whole week. So I told him I will call him when Im ready to install. Ill wait till I get all my parts I want for my Z. Hopefully there are no defects with the intake. I inspected it my friend inspected it. Both our minds were !?!?!?!??!?! lol

As Chris mentioned, it definitely sounds like you're getting unmetered air into the system, and I understand returning it to stock, but easier for us (or anyone) to diagnose with it on.

Did you happen to get the CEL codes from the dealer? Guessing it was a MAF code since they inquired about it.

Simple checklist.. did you use the t-bolt clamps (the thicker ones) at the middle of the intake, and the smaller worm drive traditional clamps at the throttle body? The t-bolt will have difficulty due to how thick they are up there.

Our shop has been very busy lately, it's the balance for guys to figure out if they want to install stuff themselves or just have our guys do it, and lately it's been the latter.

Happy to help and make sure you get taken care of. Let me know what you want to do, just shoot me an email at josh @stillen.com, I'm sure we'll get you squared away.

I know the books might tell you to unplug the sensors, but I've never done this myself as every time I did, it would throw a code, but if I just unbolted them from the intakes and left them plugged in, it never threw a code. Just be very careful with them and don't let them get dinged or fall anywhere and you'll be fine.

Yes it was the MAF sensor that they were reading. I think I know what you are talking about for the t-clamps for the throttle body. But I dont think I used one in the middle... I need a pic to understand the middle part is.

What I actually want to do to is get more parts for my car and let your mechanics install it instead. So next month will be the oil cooler then the High Flow cats. Ill be storing the g2 intake until I have what I want. Thanks Josh. Ill hit you up when Im ready.

Oh it's the Gen 2 intakes, I was assuming it was the Gen 3, which uses two types of clamps in the system. That wouldn't apply to the Gen 2, which has the airboxes and such.

Sure, just let us know, we'd be happy to schedule that with whatever else you're looking at, do it all at once..
