Question Where to take used oil?

I want to start doing my own oil change after a local dealer didn't know what ester oil was, charged me for oil additive that I didn't ask for and put the wrong viscosity oil (0w-20) in my Z.....a dealer for heaven sakes.

Anyhow, where do you guys take your used oil for disposal in the LA/OC area? Would any auto mechanic take it for free or is there normally a charge?

Thanks!

From past experiences most gas station with a repair shop or a Pep boys can take used oil.

Edit: Also the most I've used didn't charge me, But if they do? it's very nominal

i've found for convenience sake autozone's tend to be the most plentiful places to take used oil to be recycled for free

Thanks a bunch for the quick responses, guys!!

One more follow on question.......Do you typically use disposable containers like milk jugs and just drop off the whole thing or do you take a reusable one and pour it out onsite?

Places charge to take old oil???? When the recycling truck comes by to collect it, they pay the shop money for the old oil. A friend who owns an autoshop said he gets something like $.85 or $1/gal collected.

typically i just use the reuseable oil pans, the cashier at the autozones or other places that take used oil will empty it for you and then give it back.

Any shop that does oil changes are required to take your oil without any charge (atleast in so cal). They can face serious fines for turning you away.

Any auto parts shops will take used engine oil for free- state law. Typically they have a huge container in the back that you dump your used oil into. Take some shop towels/paper towels with you, it can get messy.
