I wonder if there's a way that we can fix this ourselves. It shouldn't be that hard to dial it to proper tension right? The only risk is that the dealer might void the warranty.

Most deffinitely! It happens on my driver side. There was a black piece of ruber located on the tip of the lid that will make a loud band against the the ruber trimming under the base of the ragtop....

On the other hand freeway cruising sounds sooooo sweet especially around 70-85
