They need to lock, unless you want to struggle with both the pliers and strap wrench. It's hard enough to break the thread locker without making it harder than it has to be. I still don't know why...

It's a real bitch to get the OEM knob off. Make sure you've got a strap wrench and locking pliers. Be prepared to swear at it for a while. The OEM knob may not survive the process.
