Yeah your right I do believe that my guy had to loosen the fans. I also changed mine with only a few miles and the crank pulley came right off without using a puller.

Obviously disconnect the battery. Use a bar to hold the crank pulley in place while loosening the bolt (Do Not use the starter to loosen the crank bolt). Remove the alternator to install that pulley....
