Nope thats the way it will work without the diode. When the headlights are on it will use the running light circuit to power the leds. If you turn on the leds only without the diode it will also feed...

So all you need is 2 wire taps and a length of wire. They threw in 2 led's and called it a kit.
Thanks for posting the instructions though. I will be splicing mine together this weekend.
