Design-wise the SPL would probably be easier to adjust up front, but doesn't really matter unless you're the one doing it.

I was thinking more along the lines of carnauba wax on top of most general ceramic coatings (mostly safe, but I guess the disclaimer is to research first).

Why not do both? You can always layer on waxes and sealants on top of the coating, it never hurts to have more "protective layers".
