First of all, great thread OP! Lots of helpful info in here.

Here's my attempt at the last picture that was posted by "hyunsoo1803". I am by no means a professional, I just like messing with PS.

I tried that and here's what I came up with. (Could be better by spending more time on it or by someone with more experience)



And then here's my attempt at changing color. I use a different technique than what the OP showed on page 3.
