People shoot in something other than RAW?

saber 07-30-2014 01:09 PM

I shoot in JPG when I'm lazy about editing, and would rather put the pre-time in instead to set up the shot.

Exactly, all my feature or people shots are shot in RAW; however event coverage type pics, is all JPEG so I can run a batch and not have to edit every picture one at a time

Huck 07-30-2014 01:16 PM

You can't batch edit in raw? I do...?

kayha12 07-30-2014 01:24 PM

Here is an example, these were shot in jpeg + RAW, and they are the jpeg unedited versions (post) in either car the silver car does not look silver at all

shot #1, had WB set to shade, temperature 7000
shot #2, AWB, temperature 5200
shot #3, processed and edited RAW version of shot #1

Looks like you know what to do pretty well enough, so WB on any RAW file shouldn't be a problem for you. Like I said, to get the above results, it's going to take PS. But for JPEG batching, you can run an action to color correct the images. The idea would be to get the shots right out of the camera and not have to correct, which is what you were wanting to do. That'll just involve doing my previously mentioned steps, then you should be fine.

I just perused through your Flickr, I don't see any WB issues at all, good work!

I'm trying to decide if I should buy the lens right now or not. I SHOULD be saving the money for the next couple months bills but I have a few people that want to pay me for photoshoots.

LunaZ, I want some lights to light up the subject from the front when the main light source is behind, like a sunset shot or something.

Zdayz 2014!!

6spd 07-31-2014 08:24 AM

It depends on what you want to do Huck. Are you going to be doing portraiture, outdoors, indoors, etc. Off camera lighting should come later if you don't have a good lens, such as a 50mm or 85mm prime, IMO. Learning proper lighting techniques is a honed craft that takes a long time, and I feel like unless you've pretty much mastered using ambient light, you should get a good prime lens and focus on learning depth of field and naturally lighting your subject. For the most part, and short of pros, most people will produce much better work with natural light than with flashes. Then take the plunge into off cam lighting when the time is right.

Huck 07-31-2014 08:29 AM

True that. I just bought the lens, 35mm 1.8g Nikon. It gets here Saturday and I'll start playing with that.
I'm into mostly car and nighttime photography, but I wanna start doing outside portraits and stuff. We'll see how it goes :)

Zdayz 2014!!

6spd 07-31-2014 08:33 AM

Cool beans. If you get into doing portraits, snag a different lens, like the ones I mentioned before, cuz a wider lens like the 35mm will distort faces. But thats a great lens for car work!

Huck 07-31-2014 08:35 AM

Yeah the 50mm prime is next on my list I think

Zdayz 2014!!

6spd 07-31-2014 08:51 AM

I've moved almost entirely toward the commercial look and even some conceptual photography, so most of the focal ranges I'm using are either really wide or long. IDK if you guys know this or not, but the image compression of the 35-55ish focal range is about the same as what the human eye sees, so it creates a very true to life image. A lot of people like this range.

Huck 07-31-2014 09:06 AM

That's why I went with the 35mm first, I have a DX so with sensor crop it's right around 50mm true.

Zdayz 2014!!

6spd 07-31-2014 09:15 AM

A lot of weddings I used to shoot I liked using 35. Now I hate weddings and never want to do them again lmao!

I have the 50mm 1.8g and I love using this lens for portraits and even as a walk around lens on my D7k. At wide open, even on a sunny day, it takes amazing shots and really nice bokeh. A bit cumbersome for group shots on a crop sensor body, but it's perfect for a lot of situations. The distortion is very minimal and the focal length being close to what your eye sees is very intuitive when it comes to framing a shot. I also have the 85mm, but sadly, I don't use it as much as I'd like to. I got it mainly because my next camera will be full frame.

Huck 07-31-2014 10:46 AM

Yeah full frame is on my list. The D5100 is actually my wife's, I got it for her for a Christmas present but she hardly ever uses it and doesn't even know how to change aperture or iso lol. She just likes to leave it on auto.

35mm 1.8g Nikon. What's CA? Don't know that term yet, I always shoot in RAW

Chromatic Aberration, the very annoying color fringing around objects, prevalent in lower end prime lenses. My 50 and 85 do it to a sharp degree from 1.8-2.8, but I always shoot raw so its moot to me. On your last pic, look close at the rope and you can see purple fringing. Still a cool shot nonetheless!

Huck 08-21-2014 11:49 PM

thanks for pointing it out guys, I didn't notice it before or I would have fixed it in lightroom. I think I have a button for that lol.

kayha12 08-26-2014 02:29 PM

Yeah it was bad with my 50mm 1.8, but I can't complain, still the best $100 lens to this day! a nicer lens you would have to be at 100%+ crop to notice it. But yeah lightroom or adobe camera raw, there's a button to remove it. Usually does a good job. Worst case you can desaturate the greens or purples. It's mostly green fringing or purple fringing or both even

kayha12 08-26-2014 02:40 PM

Another good bang for the buck lens
Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 VC. I picked mine up second hand for $260, but I think new they're still under $400. Shot with it both with my 60D and 6D, I like it much more on the full frame but the reach is crazy on the crop sensor. Will be tough to get of if I ever jump the gun on a 70-200 f2.8 :)

Haven't posted much in here for a while since most of the stuff I've been shooting has been bigger events or races. Last Thursday I spoke with a friend of mine over at Michelin HQ here in Greenville and found out they had a preproduction Porsche 918 on display in the main atrium since Michelin had developed a new tire specifically for the car, the Pilot Sport Cup 2. I asked if I could run by for a few minutes and take a few photos and he obliged. These were definitely not the right circumstances to take photos worthy of such an amazing feat of engineering but I snapped a few nonetheless. We couldn't move the car, it was locked up and there were people all around it constantly but I still managed to grab a few cool detail shots. Here's a link to the album:

A couple fav's:

My very first attempt at something not car related, so go easy on me lol. Plus I don't think this 35mm prime is the best lens for super close up type stuff, so... there's that.
