Agreed
I love primes for the fact that they not only shoot great in low light, but they are tack sharp with a higher f stop. Not to mention the bokeh advantage of the F stop wide open. I have a Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro and Rokinon 8mm fisheye Otherwise I'm using my Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which is just ridiculously sharp for the price point I'm thinking of getting a 30mm 1.4 |
^ nick, i purchased the canon 50 1.8 along with the my T3i yesterday. Seems that you like it? i was asking in the other thread if it was a good purchase or not.

many compare the sharpness to the higher end canon 50mm. Difference being that the 50mm 1.4 from canon has a better bokeh due to the number of blades used in the lens and the construction quality is better. But optically you can't go wrong with the 50mm 1.8 Here are a few photos I had taken with the 50mm when I first got it to give you an idea for sharpness and bokeh http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg |
i think i need to read a primer on crop factor, i always get confused by it.
so far my photography is about 40% cars, 25% conventions, 25% food, and 10% miscellaneous landscapes. i'm not sure how much is going to change (i think cars will go down, food might go up as i'm a huge foodie lol). during AX, spec jay was going nuts over his 50mm prime lens, i'm debating to try that out and see how it goes. one thing i do know, i'm awful at low light shots right now, both of my lenses are rated around f/5.6 Nitex - are those edited shots? they look pretty damn good. ...is everybody here on a canon?? |

Prime's are extremely sharp, That is mainly why people love them. Add to that, as you said... You can have a lower aperture, which allows you to take pictures in lower light. Primes are also sealed, so you don't have to worry about dust getting in them. |

That is my problem. I want a fish eye but I wouldn't use it enough to justify it. The only real reason I would want one is for rolling shots. |
Only paid $200 or so for the Rokinon, which is cheap compared to what's on the market.

I remember seeing people with Full Frame camera's were able to use the lens without any issues. I think some might have cut off the attached lens hood to clear up any problems. I could be wrong though since there are a few different versions of this lens that might work for FF.

Nick, very clear shots! Cool dog :icon17: Took a few more shots around the back yard http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0072.jpg I tried to this this little guy to slow down for a second but.. this was as in focus as i could get him with out a tripod. Had to use manual with the 50mm. http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0070.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0068.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0044.jpg |
Nice shots!
The first shot of the spider is going to be difficult to get with that lens due to the focusing distance needed. I think some people use adapters to mount the 50mm backwards to use as a macro lens. But if you're into macro I'd go for a legit Macro lens |

Yea, the video feature on the camera will work with any lens but manual focusing needs to be done as well.

nick- luv your red car trial shots on the previous page!
nitex- i take it you like insects? :icon17: phelan- im on a nikon D3100 for super-newbs. let me say 3 wks ago, i opened the box and didnt even know how to properly hold the damn thing. :icon17: hahaha. i had to read the quick-start instructions to see how to mount the lens onto the body. :p thats where i startedz. |
I posted these in another thread, I hadn't looked at them in awhile and it made me realize how much I liked them so I figured I'd put them here too.
Using Canon 55-250mm http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg |
lulz ken, we started photography at the same time
i got the d5100, only b/c the store i was at offered it at basically the same price point as the d3100 as a promo (it was like a hundred bucks more i think). holy ****...that falcon picture is really, REALLY good NICK (sorry i missed this). |
I'm not Nitex!:shakes head:
It's a Sharp Shinned Hawk  |

i focused on the knob but should've used a larger f/stop as my stereo is blurred... :icon14:

hard to tell in the low resolution pic honestly. overall exposure and balance settings look pretty good. maybe up a bit on the recovery so the reflection off of the airbag sign and the knob don't look as bright?
you should use a low f-stop on the gtr start button :p |

i couldn't recover the SRS indicator overexposure enough, i'll re-take the shot.
for now i guess i'll use a another angle for the knob closeup.. http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...or-d-close.jpg |
phelan- you mentioned 'low resolution'...
i did a quick resolution comparison between Nick's squirrel shot (240 pixels/inch) where as mine is 300 pixel/inch while image side is smaller to meet the370z.com limit. i used a tripod with 2 sec delay to take the interior picts with the garage door open. other than the lens and camera limitation, i think my f-stop and focus point is out of wack. :icon17: will re-take using a larger f/stop number... nick- is there anything else to look for with resolution in mind? im using maximum jpeg file size on PSElements9. |

=P |
resolution is the wrong word i think, the image size is what i'm looking for. it's tiny enough that i can't see the details :rofl2:

nitex- i take it you like insects? :icon17:
Ken, anything alive is more fun for me to shoot.. Took the new cam to the beach after purchasing the canon 55-250 lens :icon17: Flower shot was with my canon 50mm fixed though. Parker, that spider shot is crazy good! http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0077.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0088.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0087.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0094.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0090.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0155.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0114.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0146.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0137.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0131.jpg http://i367.photobucket.com/albums/o...i/IMG_0109.jpg |
Shots look great! My only suggestion, and this is because I'm anal with that kinda stuff. I would try to clean up a little bit of the noise in a few of the pictures.
And if we're talking about insects... http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg http://th00.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/..._nick911sc.jpg http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20..._nick911sc.jpg |
